Unable to get the waiting for host prompt to work regardless of configs

I had a previous install of jitsi meet 6 months ago and installed the current version earlier today.
I found I could not get authentication to work as follows, despite it having worked before in the earlier version.
User not yet logged in tries to access the site: They get the “Waiting for the host” prompt.
I can no longer get my system to do this, regardless of various configuration tries, resets, reboots, etc.
Rather, it does one of 2 things: Anyone can get in to any room they choose OR Nobody can get in without a user ID and password. I have tried all combinations of these with resets each time.

Welcome to the forum.

Can you share your complete prosody lua file and also your jicofo.conf?

Not allowed to put in more than one link per post, so I apparently cannot post the files…

You can copy and paste them. Check out tips here on how best to paste config and log files:

I tried pasting… that’s when it error’d out… I will try more.

Is that all you have in your jicofo.conf? Did you make changes to jicofo sip-communicator.properties instead?

Again, go through that link I shared earlier to see the paths to the configs requested. You shared your config.js instead of your prosody config requested. Here’s the path to your prosody lua file - /etc/prosody/conf.avail/your.domain.com.cfg.lua

That’s it for jicofo.conf There is no sip-communicator.property files I can find.
I cannot upload or share by pasting the prosdy conf file because I am too new a user.

OK - I found the file but cannot paste it because it has links in it…
Is there a way to email it to you?

I changed . to - to past it in… painful

I don’t get it. You’re able to paste the config.js file - you’re simply pasting text. If you’re being restricted because of your domain name in the lua, just edit those to read “domain” instead of the FQDN.

You’re also sharing the wrong files. Once again, look through that post for the paths to the right files.

Meanwhile, your jicofo.conf is incomplete and most likely the reason why you’re having problems. You need the authentication block in that file. Your jicofo.conf should look like this:

jicofo {
  xmpp: {
    client: {
      client-proxy: focus.your.domain.com
    trusted-domains: [ "recorder.your.domain.com" ]
  bridge: {
    brewery-jid: "JvbBrewery@internal.auth.your.domain.com"
  authentication: {
    enabled: true
    type: XMPP
    login-url: your.domain.com

Freddie - sorry it took so long to get back to you on this. As a first time user, I exhausted my daily limit of posts in my last attempt to answer you. As such a user I also cannot post content containing URLs (which means I cannot post the file you asked about by pasting) and I cannot upload it as a file for the same reason. I fixed the file you identified but it made no practical difference. I would be happy to email you the details and go to that method, or host a live online remote with you to get you the information you need and answers I (and likely others) need. I know this is an inconvenience for you, but I would appreciate the assistance if you are able and willing to provide it. Let me know if we can do this and I will setup a meeting (or you can) for this purpose. I will be happy to post the results if we get it fixed of course, and give you the credit you deserve for your efforts.

dpkg -l gives the following:

you are describing first the behaviour of a normal anonymous site, and second the behaviour of a normal secure domain. What do you want to do ?

BTW, to post stuff correctly on this forum (as on all the myriad of Discourse forums on the Internet) you need only one magic trick: enter 3 backticks on a separate line like this ``` (it will not do anything in my post because it’s not at the beginning of a line), paste your stuff, and then redo the 3 backticks on a new line and then it will be readable:

stuff pasted

end of pasted text.

And you can paste the whole of a prosody config file, it’s not that limited.

Finally, the ‘no available SASL mechanism’ is not good. Probably no authentication statement in the auth.yourdomain section of the prosody site config file.

Solved - purge everything - go back to formula - start again
Suggested improvements to the documentation:

apt purge jigasi jitsi-meet jitsi-meet-web-config jitsi-meet-prosody jitsi-meet-turnserver jitsi-meet-web jicofo jitsi-videobridge2
apt purge nginx-full
apt purge prosody
rm -rf /etc/prosody
rm -rf /etc/jitsi

redo the purges till right and no error messages appear

apt update

setup Web server

apt install nginx-full

apt install prosody

install jitsi-meet

apt install jitsi-meet

tell it the name of the server - use self-signed SSL cert for now

When done, get an SSL cert

/etc/prosody/conf.avail/[your-hostname].cfg.lua CHANGE to
VirtualHost “jitsi-meet.example.com
authentication = “internal_hashed”

VirtualHost “guest.jitsi-meet.example.com
authentication = “anonymous”
c2s_require_encryption = false

jicofo {
===========ADD HERE
authentication: {
enabled: true
type: XMPP
login-url: jitsi-meet.example.com
Then register users and do the systemctl restarts
