[sip-comm] Problems building project

#1

Hi.

I downloaded the sip-communicator-1.0-src from http://www.sip-communicator.org/index.php/Main/Download.

I'm having problems compiling and running the project. I am using NetBeans. I followed the how to "How to configure NetBeans to compile and debug SIP-Communicator".

But I get the following error:

Could not create Oscar: java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: null source
java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: null source
at java.util.EventObject.<init>(EventObject.java:38)
at org.osgi.framework.FrameworkEvent.<init>(FrameworkEvent.java:135)
at org.ungoverned.oscar.Noscar.fireFrameworkEvent(Noscar.java:2976)
at org.ungoverned.oscar.Noscar.start(Noscar.java:461)
at org.ungoverned.oscar.Main.main(Main.java:181)
D:\My_Documents\Downloads\sip-communicator-1.0-src\sip-communicator-1.0\build.xml:241: Java returned: -1
BUILD FAILED (total time: 31 seconds)

I figured maybe it will help to rebuild all the OSGI bundles by calling ant cc-buildloop from a command prompt, but even when I do that it goes through the whole thing of cleaning the project,
compiling all the source and generateing the javadocs, after which the tests start, which is were I get the Oscar errors again.

What am I doing wrong?

I tried to use the latest CVS version but I'm still waiting for my approval on Observer role.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks.

Yes, I had the same problem when I started developing the procedure. I resolved it
by running the cc-buildloop target (from a command prompt, not netbeans). It created
the Oscar bundles.

I've just re-run my build, and the test target generates the message "Welcome to Oscar"
before it starts running the unit tests... which you don't get.

I tried to use the latest CVS version but I'm still waiting for my
approval on Observer role.

Yes, of course! My procedure refers to the latest source in CVS. I'm not even sure
the public download source package will even run its tests properly.

Did you realise that the latest sip-communicator-1-0-draft doesn't do very much at this
moment? When you have Observer role, you ought to be able to build and run the tests
properly, but not a lot more.

Perhaps it is time for Emil to refresh the version of source available from the web site
for non-project members? After all, I don't think the original is "better" in any important
respect.

Mine said "Welcome to Oscar" just before the error message. Anyways the bundles are created now.

Sort of figured that, but I need to checkout my options, before reinventing the wheel.
How long before sip-comm will be usable?

This is probably the stupidest question ever, but how do you run it? Hitting the run button in NetBeans invokes an ant target, think it is "bundle-slick-runner".

Thanks in advance.

Not so stupid, apparently...

I asked the same question on the developers mailing list a few days ago (including the "stupid" bit). I had just finished my work on build.xml and had failed to find a "run" target. Apparently, the developers are
currently each working on their own subsets of the run environment, because the "whole thing" isn't yet runnable.

I have some guidelines from Emil and intend to create a run target in the next week. Emil thinks I'll have it ready before the developers have finished, so it might not do anything interesting - even after I've committed
it to CVS.

Everyone (especially the developers) realise the project is currently in a frustrating state. The old pre-1.0 product is clunky and has a lot of annoying deficiencies and missing features. On the other hand, if you just
want a pure java SIP phone to play around with, it isn't that bad... although you'll have to search the mailing list and wiki for the "usual gotchas". However, re-architecting around Oscar has been a big change and
until the new version is useable we are all in limbo.

Well who knows ... It's Christmas, miracles happen ( you can still take your time though  ).
