[sip-comm] Problem Publishing XMPP User Avatar (XEP-0084)

#1

I have set an avatar for an XMPP account on jabber.org using another
client (Empathy on Linux). After logging out with Empathy and logging
in to the same XMPP account with SIP Communicator (on Windows), the
picture is retrieved from the server and displayed in SIP Communicator
but it is not sent to the contacts.

Thoughts? Should a bug be filed?

Emil,

The problem is that the contacts do not retrieve it directly from the
server if I'm signed in using SIP Communicator. They simply do not
display an avatar. However, SIP Communicator does show the avatar on
the button that lets you select a picture.

If I sign into the same account with another client (Empathy on
Linux), the contacts all are able to see the avatar. Perhaps SIP
Communicator is telling (or not telling) the server to use the
previously uploaded avatar if SIP Communicator was not used to set the
picture originally.

What exacly do you mea by "sent to contacts"? Once you upload your pic, your contacts would generally retrieve it directly from the server without the intervention of your client.

What applications have you tried this with? I mean which clients fail to
retrieve the image? Have you tried this with more than one account? Does
the problem disappear after you reset the picture from within SC?

What happens when you are offline? Do others continue to not see your image?

I am asking all these questions because we are unable to reproduce your
problem (i.e. contacts see our pictures) and because SIP Communicator is
not involved in the exchange of the avatar between the server and a contact.

Cheers,
Emil

Emil,

I'll try to outline the steps I do to reproduce my problem:

1. An XMPP account (on jabber.org) is logged in with Empathy. The
avatar picture is selected using Empathy. Empathy is closed.

2. The same XMPP account is logged in with SIP Communicator. The
account's contacts (which are using Empathy) fail to retrieve the
avatar.

3. When SIP Communicator is closed the account's contacts still do not
retrieve the avatar.

4. When the same XMPP account is logged in using Empathy instead of
SIP Communicator the contacts (still using Empathy) are then able to
see the avatar.

5. When Empathy is closed the contacts using Empathy can still see the avatar.

Hope that helps. Thanks for taking the time to examine this issue.
