[sip-comm] JavaSound with ALAW codec

#1

Hi, I am building a softphone application just like the sip-communicator, and I have encountered a problem. When I use JavaSound and the ALAW codec, the sound does not get registered by the receiving phone. Incoming sound is good though. I use asterisk that can only allow ALAW, (not ULAW), so it has to be that.

Exactly the same problem appears when I use the sip communicator with JavaSound. Has someone has a similar problem, or the solution? Would appreciate it,
Matthijs Dinant

I confirm having similar issues with ALAW and, in my case, PortAudio.
The problems were mostly related to quality and extra noise. The
resulting sound was therefore audible but I still think the issue was
probably the same. Could you please log an issue and we'll try to
squeeze it in our schedule?

I am very sorry but I am fairly new at this issueing thing. I just posted an issue (783) and it says:

Issue 783 posted
Email sent to: issues@sip-communicator, mdinant

I am not sure if that is correct, as I am mdinant and I already know about this issue because I posted it...

I did not assign anyone to handle this issue.

Hey all, I just ant ran the newest repository, and the ALAW sound was fine. However, now I compiled the new(?) source, but now the issue is back again. I downloaded the complete newest version from the repository, but the issue remains, no matter what.

Can there be something wrong with my settings? For example, when I start the communicator, it looks for any accounts in the Roaming folder. Can it be that there is some old files in there that it keeps reading for every communicator version, so that the ASAP issue remains?

Hi,

strange is that this part wasn't changed and I just tested it and at my side
it looks ok. Can you try again, we have spotted that sometimes when you
change from PortAudio sound system to Javasound without restarting
sip-communicator this can lead to some problems in the sound quality, but
after you restart the application everything is fine.

Thanks

I tried it again, same thing. I am updating in eclipse, replace with latest from repository, and I have the latest version according to help->update in sip-communicator. After that I do a ant rebuild run. That’s the right way to run the latest version I hope?

Cheers, Matthijs

PS I tried with restarting after changing from PortAudio to JavaSound, no luck.
PPS I test with only 1 option available in Asterisk, either ALAW or ULAW, and I set Sip-Communicator to only one of these 2, then I call only hardphones, or let a hardphone call sip-comm. Again, incoming sound is perfect, outgoing is bad with cracking and rhythmic delays of about a couple 100 ms per delay, and this only happens with JavaSound.

Hi,

strange is that this part wasn't changed and I just tested it and at my side it looks ok. Can you try again, we have spotted that sometimes when you change from PortAudio sound system to Javasound without restarting sip-communicator this can lead to some problems in the sound quality, but after you restart the application everything is fine.

Thanks

Hey all, I just ant ran the newest repository, and the ALAW sound was fine. However, now I compiled the new(?) source, but now the issue is back again. I downloaded the complete newest version from the repository, but the issue remains, no matter what.

Can there be something wrong with my settings? For example, when I start the communicator, it looks for any accounts in the Roaming folder. Can it be that there is some old files in there that it keeps reading for every communicator version, so that the ASAP issue remains?

First tests are positive! Great! I think we can close the issue, tx Matthijs

Matthijs,

The ALAW issue should have been fixed recently. Could you please give it
another try and let us know how it goes so that we could close the issue?

Thanks,
Emil

I am very sorry but I am fairly new at this issueing thing. I just posted an issue (783) and it says:

Issue 783 posted
Email sent to: issues@sip-communicator, mdinant

I am not sure if that is correct, as I am mdinant and I already know about this issue because I posted it...

I did not assign anyone to handle this issue.

Tx for your time, Matthijs

Hey Matthijs,

Matthijs Dinant написа:

Hi, I am building a softphone application just like the
sip-communicator, and I have encountered a problem. When I use JavaSound
and the ALAW codec, the sound does not get registered by the receiving
phone. Incoming sound is good though. I use asterisk that can only allow
ALAW, (not ULAW), so it has to be that.

Exactly the same problem appears when I use the sip communicator with
JavaSound. Has someone has a similar problem, or the solution? Would
appreciate it,

I confirm having similar issues with ALAW and, in my case, PortAudio.
The problems were mostly related to quality and extra noise. The
resulting sound was therefore audible but I still think the issue was
probably the same. Could you please log an issue and we'll try to
squeeze it in our schedule?

PS loved the presentation in Brussel last weekend.
