[sip-comm] first contact with Sip Communicator

#1

Hi all, I was looking for a SIP client and think I've found one that fulfil
all of my IM needs, so thanks a lot.

Here are some remarks on my first install. I am using Sip Communicator on a
Ubuntu Gutsy fresh install.

First of all, Sip communicator does not work with the compat libraries of
java, the needed package is sun-java5-jre for gutsy.
Then, when configuring my first account, I have made a mistake... what isn't
kind is that the soft hangs on a window called : Remove Subcontact (why?),
telling me that :
17:08:01.645 GRAVE:
plugin.sipaccregwizz.SIPAccountRegistrationWizard.installAccount().240 sip:
freephonie.net appears to be an either invalid or inaccessible address sip:
freephonie.net: sip:freephonie.net.
The complete exception is in attached text.
The problem is that after, clicking wherever is useless... only a kill -9
could help...
Also, just for info, the DEBUG info isn't redirected to stderr but stdout
under linux, only java exception are dropped to stderr.

Else, everything was OK I could use my sip account and an msn account, I
just need to find now where do I configure the video

Good job to the developers,

Don

You are welcome

I am not sure I understand this, but yes, you do need Sun's java5 in
order to run SIP Communicator.

(why?), telling me that :

Ah ok I see. Seems like a bug indeed. Could you please create an issue
for it, describing the steps necessary to reproduce it, and someone
we'll have a look at it. Needless to say, it would be just great if you
could also come up with a fix!

Also, just for info, the DEBUG info isn't redirected to stderr but
stdout under linux, only java exception are dropped to stderr.

I am afraid I don't quite see what the problem is. Is there any reason
why DEBUG messages should go to stderr?

Else, everything was OK I could use my sip account and an msn account, I
just need to find now where do I configure the video

You can't configure it right now. It should run automatically if you
have a webcam. We'll be working more on this in our future releases.

Good job to the developers,

Thanks!
Emil
