[sip-comm-dev] [VOTE] Damien Roth for committer

#1

Hello all,

I would like to call a vote for granting developer role to Damien Roth.

Damien has been with us for six months now and during this time he was
constantly contributing bug fixes and new functionalities. He has started working on SIP Communicator in the context of a university project and has been very active ever since. Every new functionality he provided was followed by quick responses to new requirements and bug fixes. He has also provided a number of patches improving or fixing some existing features.

Some of Damian's contributions are:

- Dictionary protocol and wizard implementation and documentation.

- Patch that sorts the list of plugins shown in the plugin manager.

- Patch that fixes some about window and splash screen bugs.

- A number of improvements to the automatic status change configuration
dialog. (Set a title; Allow the user to close it with the X button; use dispose() instead of setVisible(false); Update the design to fit with the other dialogs (for the two buttons at the bottom of the dialog); no border and align to the right. Moved the auto away configuration dialog into the general configuration form.)

- Fixed erroneous use of DictActivator in IRC

- Improved the new contact dialog by sorting the protocol list.

- Currently working on a profile manager plugin.

Therefore, according to the procedure described in "Becoming a SIP Communicator Committer" :
http://www.sip-communicator.org/index.php/Documentation/CommitAccess

I am calling this vote on granting him the java.net Developer role.

[ ] +1 Accept Damien as a committer.
[ ] 0 Does not matter to me.
[ ] -1 Reject Damien as a committer.

Note: Votes from non-developers (non-binding votes) are encouraged since
they show the general opinion of the SIP Communicator community.

Cheers,
Yana

Hi!

I finished the work on the "new contact" dialog some time ago, because I was
not very happy with the old "new contact" dialog. I already started a
discussion about the new features, but nearly got no reply except Damien and
Yana.

As I am sure, that my changes improve the usability, I'll post them here a
second time (see attached files), and hope that someone will pick up my idea
and test it. Then we could discuss them, if we merge the changes to the main
branch.

Cheers

<quot>
Hey Thomas,

Sorry again for the lag. I am going through my 150+ mail backlog these
days so you'll probably be hearing me apologise quite often  .

I completely agree that we are probably not handling meta contacts
in the most intuitive way now. As a matter of fact, this year we are
once again part of the season of usability program on openusability.org
so Mike Oren, and his mentor Raphael Wimmer (both CCed) would be
contributing to our project input on exactly that subject.

So, back to the topic. I had a look at what you suggest and I basically
like the idea. I also had a look at what we currently have and it seems
to me that our "add contact" wizard is currently slightly inconsistent
since it allows users to choose more than one account but then seems to
ignore all but the first one.

There are still two issues that bother me a bit here:

1. On the first image you have two SIP fields. It would probably be a
good idea to let the user know which account each of these is pertaining
to.

2. (more important) The form does not allow you to enter more than one
contact per account. I agree that few users would need this feature but
some definitely will (e.g. some people have a personal and a biz account
on the same network). I am therefore afraid that this may cause
confusion and make users believe that it is not possible to merge
contacts from the same network.

One solution that I see would be to add a button next to the field that
would say sth like "more users from the same net" and would add extra
fields when clicked. This might make the form overly complicated though
so I am not sure it's a good way to go.

I am curious to know what other people think.

Cheers
Emil

Hi Thomas, all,

I like the screenshots and I think that your patch is definitely an enhancement of the existing "new contact" process!

Lubo has thrown some really good ideas about replacing the wizard with a dialog and simplifying the process of adding new protocol contacts and we'll definitely think more on this, but I think that your solution is an important improvement and you should commit it.

Yana

I finished the work on the "new contact" dialog some time ago, because I was
not very happy with the old "new contact" dialog. I already started a
discussion about the new features, but nearly got no reply except Damien and
Yana.

As I am sure, that my changes improve the usability, I'll post them here a
second time (see attached files), and hope that someone will pick up my idea
and test it. Then we could discuss them, if we merge the changes to the main
branch.

Cheers
Thomas

- Improved the ?new contact? dialog by sorting the protocol list.

Cheers,
Yana

Since Dai threw me into the discussion, I thought it would be rude to
just keep silence so here goes another questionably-useful opinion of
mine.

Firstly, I feel uneasy almost every time I see a wizard because
wizards are heavy-weight UI and are meant for infrequent tasks so
being presented with one I think the task is going to be difficult.
Unfortunately, I haven't added a contact in such a way for a long time
now (I primarily use Google Talk and it automatically adds the
contacts I send mail to) so I cannot really judge the frequency basing
the estimate on my experience (and this was the primarily reason for
me not wanting to get into the discussion).

Mostly, I'd feel more comfortable with a single text entry in which I
could write the contact id and let the application deal with it. In my
setup it would work great and I wouldn't have to do anything else - I
have 1 Google Talk, 1 MSN, 1 ICQ, 1 SIP so if i type in
12345618/nobody@gmail.com, by looking at the format of my registered
accounts and the formats of my contacts (if any) the application
should be able to deduce that I want to add an ICQ/Google Talk contact
and could just place it in the default group and let me go on with my
work. If i feel more order is necessary (and I think it is but I just
don't think groups is the answer but rather merged contacts), I'd go
afterwords and enforce it myself. Of course, if the application just
cannot determine where it should place the contact, it should ask me
in the next screen of the wizard.

Best regards,
Lubo

It will be more convenient to manage contacts automatically like this.
