[sip-comm-dev] Startup problems wrt video/audio

#1

Hi all,

I had some strange problems trying to start SC today. I updated my
sources to the latest version (on a new laptop) and was able to build as
usual, but when trying to run SC there were two issues (both using the
Eclipse and the Ant run):

* The startup process hangs for about 2 minutes (!) at the following log
lines:
09:40:23.651 FINE: impl.media.device.VFWAuto.autoDetectDevices().61
Found device Microsoft WDM Image Capture (Win32)
09:40:23.651 FINE: impl.media.device.VFWAuto.autoDetectDevices().62
Querying device. Please wait...
I could get around this by activating the webcam in another program
before starting SC so that SC isn't able to access it (I guess). In that
case, the startup process continues very quickly at this point. I had no
webcam on my old machine, btw.

* After this, the startup process stalled completely at the log lines
of:
09:50:20.813 FINE: impl.media.MediaControl.registerCustomCodecs().1106
Codec :
net.java.sip.communicator.impl.media.codec.audio.ilbc.JavaEncoder is
succsefully registered : true
09:50:20.813 FINE: impl.media.MediaControl.registerCustomCodecs().1106
Codec :
net.java.sip.communicator.impl.media.codec.audio.ilbc.JavaDecoder is
succsefully registered : true

I had no idea why this happened, but after some experimenting, I found
out that this was due to the fact that the sound on my machine was
muted... (!) As soon as I unmuted it, the startup process continued as
usual.

I also made a complete new project with the fresh sources again, just to
be sure. This still resulted in the same problem(s). Any idea why this
is happening or has anybody made similar experiences? By the way I'm
working on Windows / Eclipse.

Cheers,
Ralph

Hi Ralph!

See comments below.

The Windows camera driver of the Java Media Framework takes ages to detect
the connected devices. Currently, the only workaround is to unplug it or
otherwise disable it, as you have done. There are plans to switch SIP
Communicator from JMF to FMJ, which should resolve this, since it's video
drivers don't have this problem.

I'm afraid I can't help you with this one.

Hi,

About your second problem I've tried this on my laptop but it doesn't happen.
It seems its related with your devices, drivers and java.
Can you give more info about your hardware configuration, audio device and java version ?
Which Windows are you using ?
