Hi,
to use sip-communicator in a production like environment I conducted some tests with my private Asterisk:
- Echo
- Conference
- direct connection
both from my office and from a remote location. The aim is to find out if/when/how I can give the program to the folks I communicate with:
I.
I established a call on my LAN: eee PC 901 (First Generation Atom, kind of not really optimized hardware-but OK) <--> Asterisk SIP <--> Acer Travelmate 5720. Both machines connected to the same WLAN hub - just below.
I noticed that audio latency went through the roof when I activated Video. It took about 5..6 seconds for the voice to travel from the eee to the acer.
IIa.
The cause is clearly at the eee's side:
- An echo test with only voice stays in sync. Even after 5 minutes the latency is < ca. 500 milliseconds - which is ok
- Turning the camera on changes the pictures: audio latency is increasing rapidly from 1..2 sec to >10 sec. Video latency stays in acceptable ranges.
IIb.
The same test with the Travelmate:
- Even after 7 min echo test both picture and voice in sync (<500millisec)
I can hardly imagine that the eee lacks power to run sip-communicator.
Then I did some interoperability testing to see wheter I can use sip-communicator in a mixed environment:
III.
Linphone 3.2 (eee) <--> Asterisk <---> Sip Communicator (TravelMate):
- Audio delay OK, the video from eee is delayed a bit (1..2 sec) - I could live with it.
- Calling works both ways. When calling to Linphone, recieving video on sip-communicator does not start until the camera is activated in sip-communicator. (seems to be an issue with Linphone - does either two way video or nothing)
As my partners and I use mainly Linphone now - it is a good result.
IV.
Empathy (eee) SIP <--> Asterisk <---> Sip Communicator (TravelMate):
- Strange behaviour: Calling sip-communicator->empathy works fine for voice and video on both sides. The other way around there is no video in sip-communicator (while in empathy there is)
- It seems that the video runs for a couple of seconds and then crashes for some reason. I can see some shadows on sip-communicator which move and then freeze - no clear image.
- Latency is ok
Please see asterisk debug log of this call attached.
V. General observations:
- Recieving a video call from Linphone or Empathy - obviously QCIF results in a smaller call window with some controls covered with each other (I have to maximize the window to be able to hangup or activate video)
- As of today I have a mirror view of myself when calling with sip-communicator - obviously a new feature with version 3072 which I cannot deactivate. I haven't had it before.
- Pausing the video in full view pauses the remote video instead of the local one. So beware, before doing anything "private" - big sister is watching - even when you have your video deactivated. Put a base cap over the cam
- I would like to have a way to adjust video size as a smaller sized but clear video looks better than a big one with artefacts or even smithereens.
- Sound sometimes drops out for fractions of seconds (Java performance??)
- What do you consider minimum hardware requirements (processor, memory, bandwith) for video.
- Sip-communicator is cool and I look forward to use it with XMPP/NICE beiing able to route RTPs directly and not using my Asterisk Let's tell it to the world that there will be an universal Jingle/SIP client for all communication needs that, unlike Empathy works on Windows too (and seems to be even portable - either Webstart or out of an USB)
- I plan to make a self configuring Webstart version for folks calling me.
- Give me a notice please on how I can help. I cannot dedicate much time but I'll try. Testing and spreading the word would be fine.
Carry on with your great work
Greetings from Berlin, Frankfurt, Leipzig, Hamburg, Colombia - where ever I might go/or call.
Conrad
