[sip-comm-dev] SIP Communicator (on Windows 7) bug report: auotomatic update

#1

Hi, thank you for this very useful and well done program.
I am using SIP Communicator on Windows 7 Home and it works fine.
The only problem I have been experiencing for a while now (over
several builds) is that automatic upgrade seems to be ineffective
under Windows 7.
The description here below is related to build 2692 (automatic upgrade
will not start with the latest build) but it is the same with all the
builds I tried under Windows 7.
Thanks in advance

The program is closed, but nothing else happens; the new version
installation is NOT launched. The old version is still there.

Hi,

I've tested the same situation with the same version and I don't have
that problem. However there is a problem with version 2692 going to
newer versions. The problem at my side is that when I click ok and the
update process must start, actually the just downloaded installer is
started but in normal mode, like new install. It seems that it cannot
detect that it is launched as an update. Actually before starting the
new install the binary elevate its permissions and so the OS asks you
about that. Have you noticed that on your side?

I'm testing on windows7 64bit with java 1.6.

We will try to take care of this. It can be that your problem and the
one I've noticed came from the same place.

Thanks for reporting it!

Hi Damencho,
thank you for your email. I am not sure I understood the behaviour you
described, in particular about "normal mode" and permissions. In any
case, I am using Windows 7 home premium 32 bit, with Java 6 update 18.
All the best

Hi again,

I don't understand me either
If you download and start the installer this is the "normal mode". If
its downloaded within sip-communicator and started from it, its
started in something which I named "update mode" The installer
don't show you the license and don't ask you about folder for
installation.
What happens to me is that when its downloaded within sip-communicator
and started from there it behaves the same as starting it normally
after downloading it ("normal mode"), this happens to me with build
2692.

Cheers

Well, in my case when first launching build 2692, a windows pops up
suggesting me to update SIP communicator because a new build is
available. I just follow the instructions, I suppose it should be in
"update mode" but after completing the download no installation is
launched, as in the description I sent.

I experience similar things regulary on my WinXP labtop:

-updating via "update mode" sometimes asks me to restart computer, after rebooting no update happens and SC asks again (via update mode) to update.

then after the download via "update mode" SC only offers to "Remove" SC (the other boxes in this window are greyed out)

-also regular: after update (independent of "update mode" or manual download/installation) SC asks again to install all the accounts as there are no accounts/contacts left

also same as Franceso describes happened- in this case I manually download/install SC - here SC behaves as no version has been before installed on the PC

seems to be a problem with the windows versions only, no idea what is behind or what is the reason for it

Hi Francesco,

do you still experience this problem with later versions? And if so,
could you please log an issue so we don't miss it.

Thanks

Well, in my case when first launching build 2692, a windows pops up
suggesting me to update SIP communicator because a new build is
available. I just follow the instructions, I suppose it should be in
"update mode" but after completing the download no installation is
launched, as in the description I sent.
Ciao

2692.

Cheers

Hi Damencho,
thank you for your email. I am not sure I understood the behaviour you
described, in particular about "normal mode" and permissions. In any
case, I am using Windows 7 home premium 32 bit, with Java 6 update 18.
All the best
