[sip-comm-dev] Rename dialog

Hello,

Last week, Emil and I have a little talk about the "Rename dialog" for
a metacontact.

It's easy to set a customised name. But if the user wants to reset the
contact name (ie use the current name of one of the subcontacts), he
must rewrite it manually.

Image "rename1.png" shows the current version of the dialog (in french).

So I propose to use an editable combobox to allow the user to set a
customised name or select a name in the list.

Image "rename2.png" shows the upgraded version. My metacontact has
only one subcontact but it's easy to imagine the list with more names.

Before committing the modifications, I'd like to have your opinion of this idea.

Cheers

Damien

PS : in the second image the comboxbox have a weird design because of
my custom gtk theme.

Hello Damien,

Does the drop-down list always contain a single entry? If that's the
case, then why not go with a more obvious approach e.g. a radio button
in the spirit of "Use contact display name" and another radio button
to enable overriding it with a custom setting. I don't know really,
just dropping a combo box when I just want to remove my override
doesn't seem the most natural approach to me. For what it's worth, if
I want to remove my override, I'd just go and delete it...

I'd personally lose the "Rename dialog" and go with in-place editing
in the contact list. The Contact info dialog seems to me to be the
place where the user wants a dialog and cannot go without it so it may
as well be used to provide renaming in a dialog.

Best regards,
Lubo

Hi Lubo,

My screenshot might not be the best example of the utility of this modification.

In most of the cases, a meta-contact represents only one contact (like
the screenshot). But sometimes, it represents multiples contacts. In
that case, the editable combobox is more useful than the current
textfield.

Your idea of using a group of radio buttons is good but will take a
larger area with multiples contacts. I don't really use the
"meta-contact" style, so I can't tell the average number of contacts
of a meta-contact. Does someone know ?

The real question is "which method will be more easy to understand for
the users ?". Personnaly, I prefer the editable combobox, but my mind
is too developer oriented.
