I got the following exception when I closed the ChatWindow after
receiving an MSN message from a spammer who I didn't have in my
contact list and who appeared as a contact in the NotInContactList
group upon receiving the message. I'm not sure how it's related to
ad-hoc chat rooms.

Yes, this is quite strange.
I've checked some code related to the exception, and saw that the exception is due to
a null AdHocChatRoomWrapper (used as a constructor parameter in the EventObject).

Was there a chatroom UI in the ChatWindow? Or simple conversation UI?

I sometimes get spam messages with MSN, they appear in a simple conversation UI.
I will take care when closing them, in order to check if this exception is thrown too.

Thanks for the information,

It just happened again and I noticed that the exception was printed
without me closing the ChatWindow. I'm sorry for providing incorrect
information in the first place.

There's no ad-hoc chat messaging initiated by me before or after
receiving the spam message.

Please note the FINE message "Could not join the Ad-hoc chat room" at
the top which means that either MsnSwitchboard#getAttachment() returns
null or pendingAdHocChatRoomList doesn't have an association for the
returned value. Is it possible that this spammer is sending me this
message in an ad-hoc chat room created by her?

All I see is that the spam message pops up in my ChatWindow, the
spammer is shown as offline and when I check the output of SIP
Communicator it contains this exception.

Hello

I my lab I have several positions with SC.

The HW is all the same, HP Desktops or HP ThinClients.

The O.S. are Debian and Windows XP.

I notice that with Debian theres a bigger sound delay during a SIP call than with Windows.

Is there a way to enhance the performance of SC / Debian, say, to have the same quality as SC/Windows (or better) ?

Hi,

currently sip-communicator is using javasound for audio capture and playback which has some disadvantages. On linux it uses the old oss, than alsa.
Today I finished support for portaudio and I think with it that this delay is minimal(almost unnoticeable) no matter of the OS.
I'm still polishing things and putting some configuration options so stay tuned I will soon commit it at first for linux i386/amd64 and later will come macosx and windows support for portaudio.

Cheers

It just happened again and this time I was prepared with the necessary
breakpoints while running SIP Communicator in Debug in Eclipse. It all
happens in OperationSetAdHocMultiUserChatMsnImpl:

1. MsnSwitchboardListener#switchboardStarted(MsnSwitchboard) gets
called and MsnSwitchboard#getAttachment() == null. So no AdHocChatRoom
is created and logger.debug("Could not join the Ad-hoc chat room.")
get executed.

2. MsnSwitchboardListener#contactLeaveSwitchboard(MsnSwitchboard,
MsnContact) gets called.

It checks for an existing AdHocChatRoom with
getLocalAdHocChatRoomInstance(MsnSwitchboard). Note that this last one
consults adHocChatRoomCache with a key of type MsnSwitchboard.

Since there's no such AdHocChatRoom, next comes
createLocalAdHocChatRoomInstance(MsnSwitchboard). I'm not clear why an
AdHocChatRoom is created when someone has left it, I'd personally not
do that at all. The other strange bit is that the method in question
consults adHocChatRoomCache with the key
String.valueOf(switchboard.hashCode()) which isn't an MsnSwitchboard
but a String!

3. Then of course
MsnSwitchboardListener#switchboardClosed(MsnSwitchboard) gets executed
and the exception happens because there is no AdHocChatRoomWrapper. I
guess the problem here is different but I haven't gone into tracking
why no AdHocChatRoomWrapper is created and found.

Hi Lubomir,

Thanks for pointing this out and going further by debugging the problem!

I have just committed a piece of code that should fix the issue.

(more inline)

It just happened again and this time I was prepared with the necessary
breakpoints while running SIP Communicator in Debug in Eclipse. It all
happens in OperationSetAdHocMultiUserChatMsnImpl:

1. MsnSwitchboardListener#switchboardStarted(MsnSwitchboard) gets
called and MsnSwitchboard#getAttachment() == null. So no AdHocChatRoom
is created and logger.debug("Could not join the Ad-hoc chat room.")
get executed.

Emil has also pointed me this log earlier. The thing is that this event is also received when a single switchboard is created and thus every time we open a single chat on Msn it logs that we "couldn't join the ad-hoc room", which is a non-sense. I've simply removed this log.

2. MsnSwitchboardListener#contactLeaveSwitchboard(MsnSwitchboard,
MsnContact) gets called.

It checks for an existing AdHocChatRoom with
getLocalAdHocChatRoomInstance(MsnSwitchboard). Note that this last one
consults adHocChatRoomCache with a key of type MsnSwitchboard.

Since there's no such AdHocChatRoom, next comes
createLocalAdHocChatRoomInstance(MsnSwitchboard). I'm not clear why an
AdHocChatRoom is created when someone has left it, I'd personally not
do that at all. The other strange bit is that the method in question
consults adHocChatRoomCache with the key
String.valueOf(switchboard.hashCode()) which isn't an MsnSwitchboard
but a String!

This is all my fault. I've recently re-factored the Msn implementation in order to remove some redundancy and avoid confusion of multiple create, find and get chat room methods and apparently I've missed these :frowning: It should be fixed now.

3. Then of course
MsnSwitchboardListener#switchboardClosed(MsnSwitchboard) gets executed
and the exception happens because there is no AdHocChatRoomWrapper. I
guess the problem here is different but I haven't gone into tracking
why no AdHocChatRoomWrapper is created and found.

I think this should not happen with the above fixes. However if it does, just ping me and I'll debug that.

Thanks again !
Yana

Yes, this is quite strange.
I've checked some code related to the exception, and saw that the exception
is due to
a null AdHocChatRoomWrapper (used as a constructor parameter in the

Was there a chatroom UI in the ChatWindow? Or simple conversation UI?

I sometimes get spam messages with MSN, they appear in a simple

I will take care when closing them, in order to check if this exception is
thrown too.

Hi,

currently sip-communicator is using javasound for audio capture and
playback which has some disadvantages. On linux it uses the old oss,
than alsa.
Today I finished support for portaudio and I think with it that this
delay is minimal(almost unnoticeable) no matter of the OS.
I'm still polishing things and putting some configuration options so
stay tuned I will soon commit it at first for linux i386/amd64 and later
will come macosx and windows support for portaudio.

Cheers

Yes it is actually! You need to go to the media preferences and select
port audio (default is java sound). We've been waiting for people to
test before we make port audio the default. Please give it a try and let
us know how it works.

Yes, this is quite strange.
I've checked some code related to the exception, and saw that the
exception is due to
a null AdHocChatRoomWrapper (used as a constructor parameter in the
EventObject).

Was there a chatroom UI in the ChatWindow? Or simple conversation UI?

I sometimes get spam messages with MSN, they appear in a simple
conversation UI.
I will take care when closing them, in order to check if this exception
is thrown too.

Thanks for the information,

Hi,

strange, so you have only JavaSound and None in options ?
You are using debian, right ? What is the version and is it amd64?
Can you send me a log running with --debug option. Search for something like "No portaudio detected" in the begining, that is what I need those lines near it.

Thanks

The way I run SC is downloading the sources, building it and compiling it with Netbeans.

exception is due to
a null AdHocChatRoomWrapper (used as a constructor parameter in
the EventObject).

Was there a chatroom UI in the ChatWindow? Or simple conversation UI?

I sometimes get spam messages with MSN, they appear in a simple
conversation UI.
I will take care when closing them, in order to check if this
exception is thrown too.

Thanks for the information,
Valentin

Hi Carlos,

Since PortAudio wasn't appearing for you in the Media configuration
form, we thought it could be that some of the dependencies of
libjportaudio.so weren't found on your system. For what it's worth,
we've only seen PortAudio not appear because of missing native
dependencies. That's why we asked you to send us the output of the
command ldd on the libjportaudio.so in use on your system. If you're
running 32-bit Linux, you should run ldd on
sip-communicator/lib/native/linux/libjportaudio.so. And if you're
running 64-bit Linux, you should run ldd on
sip-communicator/lib/native/linux-64/libjportaudio.so. (The command
"uname -m" should show you the whether you Linux is 32-bit or 64-bit.)

Best regards,
Lubomir

Hi

There is no such file under /usr

I do have
sip-communicator/lib/native/linux/libjportaudio.so
And
sip-communicator/lib/native/linux-64/libjportaudio.so

The way I run SC is downloading the sources, building it and compiling it with Netbeans.

Hi again Carlos,

Martin tested it on debian and point me the problem, I had forgot to
remove the link with jack.
So I removed it and commited. It must be build 2169 that you can test.

Thanks

Hi,

strange, so you have only JavaSound and None in options ?
You are using debian, right ? What is the version and is it amd64?
Can you send me a log running with --debug option. Search for
something like "No portaudio detected" in the begining, that is what I
need those lines near it.

Thanks

Hi,

currently sip-communicator is using javasound for audio capture and
playback which has some disadvantages. On linux it uses the old
oss, than alsa.
Today I finished support for portaudio and I think with it that
this delay is minimal(almost unnoticeable) no matter of the OS.
I'm still polishing things and putting some configuration options
so stay tuned I will soon commit it at first for linux i386/amd64
and later will come macosx and windows support for portaudio.

Cheers

Hello

I my lab I have several positions with SC.

The HW is all the same, HP Desktops or HP ThinClients.

The O.S. are Debian and Windows XP.

I notice that with Debian theres a bigger sound delay during a SIP
call than with Windows.

Is there a way to enhance the performance of SC / Debian, say, to
have the same quality as SC/Windows (or better) ?
