[sip-comm-dev] Plugin x Service

#1

Hi All,

I am new to the subject, and I'm trying to understand What is the difference
between "plugin" and "services" (in SIP Communicator) and When I use one or
the other. I would be grateful if someone could help me.

Hi Cesar,

I think a possible good starting point is a brief knowledge of OSGi. Wikipedia may come to help with at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OSGi. The terms "plugin" and "bundle" may be interchangeably used in some texts so keep an open eye for "bundle" when interested in "plugin".

Anyway, it may help to think of plugins in SIP Communicator (at least at first) as JAR files and of services as Java abstractions in the source code such as interfaces and their implementations.

I hope the above gives you a correct direction on the way to understanding the SIP Communicator architecture.

Regards,
Lubomir
