[sip-comm-dev] Native capture device for Microsoft Windows

#1

Hi all,

Native capture device using DirectShow has been commited in trunk revision 7132, Windows installers will be available very soon.
So we encourage Windows users to test it and report here if they encountered problems/crash. Be sure to select the right camera (not those beginning by "civil:").

By the way the problem of launching video on Windows during a videocall (that has been reported by some of you) should be solved now.

Regards,

Re: [sip-comm-dev] Native capture device for Microsoft Windows
The labtop which does not show preview and final video with DirectShow (Sony Vaio FE41Z with integrated Sony Visual Camera VGP-VCC4) has been downgraded from Vista to XP,

the supporting driver has been downloaded somewhere from internet. Camera works with civil-preview and also normally with Skype.

a) Can the driver be the reason that DirectShow is not working in this case?

b) will there be a support also for the “civil” types (although DirectShow has better quality)? (I have no idea about the technical details)

thanks again for this nice progress!!

If your camera begins with "civil:", it does use lti-civil to capture and *not* the new DirectShow system.

Have you other choices in the list ?

Do you use SVN sources or installer ? If you use SVN, revision have to be at least 7132. DirectShow system should be in installers since build 2645.

Hi Sebastian,
thx a lot for this progress!
I have tested on two WinXP labtop the recent version.
Both labtops have listed their intergrated cameras without "civil" but with one I dont get
the preview-pictures in the Media-settings.

However, at least in one direction (from labtop with the working preview to the other
without preview) I receive a VERY nice video image of the counterpart!!! (but not
vice-versa)

Will try with other PCs if possible

Thx a lot again!

Hi all,

I've tried the latest sources from the repository and... I'm still getting
some errors.

When ant rebuild is finished, I execute sip communicator, go to the Media
settings and I see that my camera is detected 2 times with and without the
civil: string at the beginning.

I select the one without civil: and stablish a videoconference, click on the
camera icon and the log shows what I've attached.

I will try to make more tests in different computers.

Re: [sip-comm-dev] Native capture device for Microsoft Windows
Dear Sebastien,

today I marked in my calender “video with SC working…”:

in our institute (same network) I could receive video between both labtops (described in my last email below) with nice quality - congratulations!

The preview window on both works with DirectShow!

However when I call contact outside (another town; partner using same version WinXP with nb 2656) video does not appear and the sound stops by pushing the “toogle video” button.

zRTP-Audio is working

will try again at institute with VPN to see if there is difference

thx a lot, MS

Re: [sip-comm-dev] Native capture device for Microsoft Windows - working!
second good news:

Video is working also outside network (both sides had to restart SC; this time zRTP did not jump on), however quality was not so good: big pixels and weird colours; better when the window is stretched to the full screen, when small window grey box (no idea if this depends on camera or on connection) - if possible I will try out different combinations

this is really great progress, thanks again!

Hi,

I'm still getting errors with video in Windows. I've made some test with
different computers and different cameras and when I click in the camera
icon I only get a gray rectangle instead of my image.

I think there's some kind of problem with my Asterisk 1.6.2.6 server because
I've stablished a videconference between two iptel.org accounts using Sip
Communicator and I can send and receive video in both sides of the
conference.

Do I have to install something else in my Ubuntu server with Asterisk to
enable video? I think I have the settings (extensions.conf, sip.conf)
correctly set so... I don't know where the problem could be!!

Attached you can find the log I got in the last execution. The first
exception appears when I click in the camera button. The second appers when
I finish the call.

Thanks!!

According to your logs, the device is null in net.java.sip.communicator.impl.neomedia.jmfext.media.protocol.DirectShow.DataSource::doStart(), so problem could be located to DataSource::setLocator(MediaLocator locator):
- locator is null => device is null;
- Locator's protocol mismatch (strange if happen);
- Zero DirectShow devices (strange if you can select one in the configuration panel);
- Mismatch name of the devices with locator's remainder.

If you have Java skills can you check these things (if not I will send you a patch) ?

Hi Sebastien,

The camera I'm using is quite old. I'm not sure about the manufacturer or
model because it doesn't have any logo. I only have the details from the
drivers: the camera is a USB PC Camera 301P

I'll make test with another cameras to see if the problem persists.

Hi Seb,

I don't mean to interfere in the conversation here. I just want to
mention that one of the reasons for the creation of our own video
capture implementations was to be able to capture in formats handled
by FFmpeg i.e. our video CaptureDevices don't have to be limitted to
RGB24 and RGB32/ARGB. For example, the video CaptureDevice on Linux
which uses Video for Linux Two currently captures UYVY and YUYV and
new formats can be added by just specifying the FFmpeg equivalent of a
given Video for Linux 2 pixel format.

Best regards,
Lubo

Hi Sebastien,

I've checked what you told me and:
- The preview in configuration panel is working correctly for all of the
devices
- locator is not null => device is not null
- locator's protocol are the same
- 2 DirectShow devices
- Name of the devices match with locator's remainder.

Attached is the log I got after setting some debugging points.

Thank you! :slight_smile:

Hi Sebastien,

I've checked what you told me and:
- The preview in configuration panel is working correctly for all of the devices
- locator is not null => device is not null
- locator's protocol are the same
- 2 DirectShow devices
- Name of the devices match with locator's remainder.

Attached is the log I got after setting some debugging points.

OK,

device is set to null in another place: doDisconnect(), can you see if this method is called before doStart(). And also add debug in setDevice() (maybe another call with null as parameter happen...). Thanks.

Ok, here's the log which shows the order of the calls to the methods you

The *this.device* and *device *lines make reference to the value of that
variables when setDevice is called, before entering the if statement.

Hi again Sebastien,

Rereading your mail and checking my log file, I think that the problem could
be in the second try SC does to start video (although I don't know why it is
starting video two times).

I mean, first of all it tries to start the video doing this and finally
disconnects:

[java] JUANVI: setDevice()

[java] JUANVI: this.device -> null

[java] JUANVI: device ->
[java] JUANVI: doConnect()
[java] JUANVI: doStart()
[java] JUANVI: doStop()

[java] warning: The VAD has been replaced by a hack pending a complete rewrite
[java] warning: The VAD has been replaced by a hack pending a complete rewrite
[java] JUANVI: doDisconnect()

You told me that device is set to null in doDisconnect, so in the
second try to send video, it doesn't call the setDevice() method
again, that's why we get the NullPointerException in doStart:

     [java] JUANVI: doConnect()
     [java] JUANVI: doStart()

Am I right??

[java] JUANVI: doDisconnect()

  You told me that device is set to null in doDisconnect, so in the second try to send video, it doesn't call the setDevice() method again, that's why we get the NullPointerException in doStart:

     [java] JUANVI: doConnect()
     [java] JUANVI: doStart()

Am I right??

Yes,

Can you try with this patch (method doConnect()):

if getLocator() returns not null, it should correctly set device again.

OK,

device is set to null in another place: doDisconnect(), can you see if
this method is called before doStart(). And also add debug in setDevice()
(maybe another call with null as parameter happen...). Thanks.

Hi,

I'm still getting errors with video in Windows. I've made some test
with different computers and different cameras and when I click in the
camera icon I only get a gray rectangle instead of my image.

Is the preview in configuration panel works ?

I think there's some kind of problem with my Asterisk 1.6.2.6 server
because I've stablished a videconference between two iptel.org accounts
using Sip Communicator and I can send and receive video in both sides of the
conference.

Do I have to install something else in my Ubuntu server with Asterisk
to enable video? I think I have the settings (extensions.conf, sip.conf)
correctly set so... I don't know where the problem could be!!

According to your logs, the device is null in
net.java.sip.communicator.impl.neomedia.jmfext.media.protocol.DirectShow.DataSource::doStart(),
so problem could be located to DataSource::setLocator(MediaLocator locator):
- locator is null => device is null;
- Locator's protocol mismatch (strange if happen);
- Zero DirectShow devices (strange if you can select one in the
configuration panel);
- Mismatch name of the devices with locator's remainder.

If you have Java skills can you check these things (if not I will send
you a patch) ?

Attached you can find the log I got in the last execution. The first
exception appears when I click in the camera button. The second appers when
I finish the call.

Thanks!!

Hi,

I added support for YUY2, UYVY and NV12 in addition to ARGB, RGB24/32 in
revision 7140. More YUV format will follow if they fit to FFMPEG format.

The labtop which does not show preview and final video with DirectShow
(Sony Vaio FE41Z with integrated Sony Visual Camera VGP-VCC4) has been
downgraded from Vista to XP,
the supporting driver has been downloaded somewhere from internet.
Camera works with civil-preview and also normally with Skype.

a) Can the driver be the reason that DirectShow is not working in this
case?
b) will there be a support also for the "civil" types (although
DirectShow has better quality)? (I have no idea about the technical details)

thanks again for this nice progress!!
