[sip-comm-dev] My GSoC experience.

#1

Hello devs,
Today I had my last meeting with my mentor for my GSoC project, which was
the development of an advanced plugin manager for SIP Communicator. I just
wanted to tell everyone that it has been a wonderful experience, even if I
had to pass some sunny days locked inside to write some code  . The SIP
Communicator community is GREAT and really helpful. I asked a couple of
questions on the mailing lists and I always got constructive comments. I
thank you all for that! The project itself was really great from the
beginning to the end. This experience was my first big open source project,
and like I said to my mentor earlier today, it changed the way I see
software. Before, I would use a software and ask myself "what does it do?",
but now I also add "how does it do it?". I have the feeling of having
accomplished something great this summer and it's because of all of you that
gave me this opportunity.

But all of this wouldn't have been possible without the help of my mentor,
Cristina Tabacaru. It was both our first GSoC experience, and everything
turned out well! She was always available and comprehensive. She helped me
solve many issues and without her, the project wouldn't be as awesome as it
is :). Thank you Cristina!

Once again, thank you everyone for accepting me in your dev crew

Sincerely,

Hear hear! This was my first experience with an established FOSS project as
well and it was great finally doing work with meaning beyond academia. Many
thanks to Yana, my mentor, who seems to have the magical power to melt the
most daunting problems in a matter of minutes. Also, thanks Emil for your
exhaustive feedback on the keybinding support - I was a tad weary of some of
the changes but in the end you were right and they all turned out for the
best (hopefully we'll get them committed at some point!). It's been a
fantastic experience and I look forward to continuing to work with you both!
Cheers! -Damian

Folks,

I'd also like to thank you very much for such a wonderful summer! We've
had excellent students this year. All of you were very smart and
talented. We've all had our ups and downs but in the end of the day it
has been a pleasure working with you!

During the next few months we would be going over all of your projects
and would be gradually merging them into the trunk. It would probably
take some time but we *will* go through all of them so please bare with
us and try to keep them up to date in the mean time as that would
simplify our task tremendously.

I sincerely hope that you would stick with us through the process and
would eventually become fully fledged SC developers.

Thank you all!

Emil

SC devs all around,

It's been such a tremendous pleasure to discover GSoC with you all ...
There's nothing like working with open source ... if it's about contributing
code or guiding students to discover new techs and communities. Lucky me,
I've been there
Mathieu, congratulations for working so hard and for being so enthusiastic
and creative during these 3 months.
Kudos for making it all a success !!!

Greetings,
Cristina

Hi all,
a little late, but I would also like to thank to few people. This has been
my first year of GSoC and also my first experience with Open Source
development, so there was lot of new stuff and I had a lot to learn (and
hopefully I did learn a thing or two) so I am very thankful for that
opportunity. I remember when Emil IM-ed me wheter I wanted to work for
Sip-Communicator (since there was also other organization willing to give me
a spot) I chose Sip-comm and I have never regretted that decision.

As I mentioned this was my first touch with Open Source development and I
feel like I have made some good progress with my skills (don't get me wrong
I still feel like a noob, but now I feel like a noob that nows much more
than he had before  ). So for this I would like to thank my mentor Ken
Larson. He is very sharp guy and it was pleasure to work with him. Ken, you
rock! Also I would like to thank to Emil for giving me chance to be part of
this in the first place.

Although I have not been very active in the mailing lists I read them and I
have to say I like the community around Sip-Communicator (and not to mention
the Sip-Communicator itself  ) so I would be more than glad to stick
around even after the GSoC is over. It seems to me that FMJ does not have as
active community, so I would like to stay with it as well (to help to create
community  ). I hope I will be able to contribute to both of these project
and hope I will be at least a bit useful to any of them.

Cristina, all,

It has been a pleasure working with you during this edition of GSoC. You
have all been fabulous! It's been a very busy summer and being able to
count on you to completely take care of the students has been a
tremendous relief!

Thank you all and hope to have you again next year!

(Aren't we the best community there is! )

Cheers

Hey Martin,

Sorry for not replying earlier.

Martin Harvan 薪邪锌懈褋邪:

Although I have not been very active in the mailing lists I read them
and I have to say I like the community around Sip-Communicator (and not
to mention the Sip-Communicator itself  ) so I would be more than glad
to stick around even after the GSoC is over. It seems to me that FMJ
does not have as active community, so I would like to stay with it as
well (to help to create community  ). I hope I will be able to
contribute to both of these project and hope I will be at least a bit
useful to any of them.

Thank you for participating in GSoC! Integrating FMJ in SC and removing
all dependencies on JMF is a dream that many of us have been having for
a while now. Your work has brought us closer! Hope that you would indeed
stick around and help us get there!

Cheers
Emil
