[sip-comm-dev] help Ubuntu 8.10 network connectivity

#1

Hi Lubo, hi All,

very frustrating since yesterday I had video preview and
network connectivity on the DELL mini 9 under Ubuntu 8.10,
but today nothing.

Here are the logs:

root@EL-Mini-9:~# /etc/init.d/networking restart
* Reconfiguring network interfaces...
Internet Systems Consortium DHCP Client V3.1.1
Copyright 2004-2008 Internet Systems Consortium.
All rights reserved.
For info, please visit http://www.isc.org/sw/dhcp/

Listening on LPF/eth0/00:21:70:bb:99:b2
Sending on LPF/eth0/00:21:70:bb:99:b2
Sending on Socket/fallback
receive_packet failed on eth0: Network is down
DHCPDISCOVER on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 3
send_packet: Network is down
Terminated
Failed to bring up eth0.

···

-------------------------
/etc/network/interfaces content is:

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp

------------
if changed to

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet static
address 192.168.1.146
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.1.25

then do
/etc/init.d/networking restart

result of /etc/init.d/networking restart is

* Reconfiguring network interfaces... [ OK ]

but still no network connectivity
Gnome network manager has been removed, wicd installed, but
not loaded into memory (no autostart on bootup)
network config is manual via /etc/network/interfaces
no network managers

Note that if I boot U 8.10 that I installed on a USB stick,
same thing happens.
However, a LiveUSB U 8.10 is different. It can connect
to network, but here video preview is black. This says
there is no hardware problem in network card.

You can understand why I am frustrated. I wanted to send
Lubo a log file of working video preview that fails after
clicking another tab.

If I load wicd network manager, problem still can not be
solved. Can not even ping router with its IP address.

if I can not find and correct the problem, will have to
completely reinstall Ubuntu 8.10

Regards, Earl

Hi Earl,

If there were no surprises, where would all the excitement come from?
 Seriously, don't rush it because you've already provided us with
some logs and, most importantly, we know how to reproduce problems
with the preview on Linux. Damencho is taking a shot at it at the
moment (but he's also working hard on a bunch of other issues so we
have to be patient) and, if it doesn't give in (which I highly doubt),
I'm willing to look into it again.

Best regards,
Lubo
