[sip-comm-dev] G721 G729

#1

Hi,

Are there any plans to suport codecs G721 and G729, as both are a must
in telecommunication environment (based on GSM networks and Cisco
infrastructure)?

Maybe I could contribute to the project by adding both.

Regards

Hi,
I am just Summer of Code student so I might not be correct, but I don't know about near-future plans to implement the mentioned codecs.
Having G.721 and G.729 would be great, but as far as I know G.729 is licensed (http://www.sipro.com).
Also according to my knowledge G.721 has been superseded by G.726.
It is intended that the JMF will be replaced by FMJ so if you would like to contribute contributing to FMJ would make sense.

Cheers, Martin

The most popular codecs in use in VoIP software (mostly Asterisk, but
that influences everyone else) are G.711, G.729, and GSM (and Skype's
proprietary codec, but that's not available for outside development).

S-C would benefit a lot if its audio codecs could be plugins that
simply reuse the binary plugins available for other SW, rather than
rewriting them each for S-C. If there are existing Java codecs it would
be good to just reuse them, and simply write an S-C interface wrapper.

G.729 is patented, and requires a license to actually *use*
commercially. But there are open source example implementations, and a
license is not required for developers and researchers working on
creating or improving the product. If someone uses the *final product*
in a *commercial activity* (eg. they bought the codec, or they're using
it to make calls that they pay for, or the codec is distributed in a
promotional tool that makes *someone* money, even if a third party pays
for the codec to be used by its final user), then the codec must be
licensed from the patentholder. If anyone distributes the codec in an
app that is used for a commercial purpose by someone else, the
distributor or the recipient must pay for a license. Anyone developing a
G.729 codec (or revising an existing one) for SIP-Communicator doesn't
need to get a license during development (and legitimate testing). But
if you distribute a release of S-C, you need to get a license, or
require its users to get a license, or its use is illegal.

The current plan is to add new codecs to FMJ, which SC will then use, and other projects may also use. Thanks to Martin, one of the achievements of the current GSoC project should be a working GSM/RTP codec.
