[sip-comm-dev] configuration path for portable application

#1

Hi folks,
I am trying to use sip-communicator as a portable version from an usb-stick
and save all my settings, logs, etc. locally on this stick.
Is there any property I could specify to set a custom configuration path?
Mu-commander (www.mucommander.com) for example offers this kind of
distribution even es nightly build, i think this could be also quite
attractive for sip-communicator. Then you would a cross-platform portable
IM-solution!

Thanks for any hint
Uli

Hi, Uli!
For settings this property should be
net.java.sip.communicator.SC_HOME_DIR_LOCATION.

Hi there!
I started to build the sip-communicator with eclipse. However, I did
e.g. not see the tray-icon. I found out, that the dev-doc for eclipse is
not complete at this moment.

1) the build path have to be adapted due to the system on which you
develop
2) for debugging, the environment-path (to the platform dependent dlls)
has to be adapted.

See my screenshots I attached.
Probably the doc shall be rewritten. If someone contacts me directly, I
can give hints, what to change, because I use eclipse 3.3.

Another issue is the path in the .classpath file. It points to an old
version of ant, which is not available in 3.3 any more.

Shall I file an issue?

Best regards.
Thomas

Hi Thomas,

sorry for the late reply.

I've updated my eclipse to 3.3 and I experienced the same problems. Actually in my case I haven't been able to run the application. I make all configurations and when I click on run nothing happens. You said that you don't see the systray icon, but you successfully run the application, is that right?

We should definitely update the documentation by adding instructions for different versions of Eclipse and also resolve the issue with the ant.jar in the .classpath file.

Are you a volunteer to write such a documentation?

Thanks,
Yana

Hi Yana!
I see the icon right now, I can debug the application. And yes, if you want,
I can update the documentation. Just a matter of setting the right include
path and path to the dll-files in windows. Shall I just download it from the
web and update it and send it to you? Or you give me write access to the
Wiki? I do not care, like you prefer it. (But I can only write the
documentation for Eclipse running on Windows).

Thanks! I think, as our prototyping phase will long for some month, I can
contribute even other things.

* What I already coded is a Contact-Import-Service (and one plugin for
MS-Outlook), which reads telefon numbers out of outlook, adds a group to the
contact list and imports these numbers into the contact list.
It is alpha, not documented yet and there are surely some issues at the
moment, but we plan to stabilized it anyway.
If you think, that such a service is needed and such a plugin is welcome, I
can provide the source code as well. The Plugin is internationalized and
builds up on a customized SIP-Wizard Plugin. This Plugin searches for
importers after the first page and lets you choose where to import contacts
from. We can discuss it, if the team wants, when we think it is stable
enough for publicity.

* As well we made a German translation (90%) of the
net.java.sip.communicator.impl.gui.i18n package. We could also provide it,
if the team wants it.

It sounds like a very attractive feature indeed and we would be very
interested in integrating such a plugin. As soon as you have finished documenting you could send us a patch and we could try integrate an alpha version. How this sounds for you?

It's most welcome. I remember seeing someone else contributing a German
translation but I can't find it right now. Anyways, we'll have a look at
both of them and have you resolve any differences that they may contain.

However, please excuse us if it takes some more time for integrating these, as Emil has explained on the mailing list we're a little under pressure, because of the Google Summer of Code deadline.

Thanks Thomas!

Hi Thomas,

Nice catch!

This appears to be a problem under java 1.6, because the systray classes added in java 6, have the same names as the ones we use with the JDIC library.

I've committed a fix and it should be ok now. However I haven't used the imports you've sent, simply because our project convention recommends using only package imports, except in the cases, where this is not possible (as in our case here). So I just added two explicit class imports for the ambiguous classes.

Thanks!

Hi *!

I just finished the outlook plugin (alpha!) for the sipcommunicator. It
integrates into the tools menu and adds a menu-entry to import. You can
select, whether to import once or every startup, set the name of the contact
group, set the display style (firstname lastname or lastname firstname) and
finally, select the folder, which contains your contacts.
The OLE automation uses SWT to connect to and read from outlook.

If anyone wants this plugin, I can provide it and send the jar-file and/or
the sourcecode. I have no possibility in the moment to provide the
sourcecode in a versioned way - sorry.

So, just write me an email, to get the plugin. If anyone finds bugs or has
proposals for extensions, please contact me.

Yes, this could be the problem. I use Java 1.6.
Is it planned for some time to switch on java 1.6 and the latest
felix-release, or should I downgrade my system? However, it is the first
problem I found with Java 1.6.

Yours!

the
imports you've sent, simply because our project convention recommends
using only package imports, except in the cases, where this is not
possible (as in our case here). So I just added two explicit class
imports for the ambiguous classes.

Thanks!

Is anyone working on a similar plugin for S-C integration into Mac's
Entourage and/or Linux's Evolution?

Hi Thomas,
I'm no Outlook user, but it seems to me quite a piece of work you
should've put together there :). If you're using SWT I "suspect" this
looks quite native, isn't it? Maybe Outlook and SC users will come up
with better answers after trying your plugin

Cheers,
Mihai
