[sip-comm-dev] Chat focus?

#1

Hello people,

I would agree with Johny that grabbing the focus isn't quite a good idea. I've had some bad experiences while trying to login to my webmail account or somewhere else. The chat window appears minimized but grabs the keyboard focus. Then I type my username, <TAB>, my password and then <ENTER>. You guess what happens then.

Maybe we should choose between:
a) If we want to grab the keyboard focus, that should be clearly visible to the user - the window should pop up in front of their eyes;
b) If the window will appear minimized, then it should not grab the keyboard focus;

Thanks,
Pavel Tankov

Agree. That's what I was thinking also.

Grabbing focus is also one of my long standing complaints about SIP Comm...this should not be the default behavior in my opinion.

Is there a setting for this behavior now? I don't see it in my settings windows.

Hi Johny,

it's very nice to hear that you're using SC as your main IM client:)

"Bring to front" is now the default behavior, but you can easily change
it by unchecking "Settings/Bring window to front" in the chat window.
Actually I was thinking lately of making "Bring to front" the optional
behavior.

Alex was also proposing to have some tips in the chat window, when it's
opened for the first time, which could guide the user on how to change
the default behavior. I found this also a good idea and we'll try to
implement it soon.

Hey Richard,

Maybe you figured this already but in case you haven't there's a "bring
to front" option in the settings menu of the chat window (note that I am
talking about the menu and not the settings dialog). If it is checked
then every message is going to bring the containing window to the front
of your desktop. If it isn't, then the only messages that would take the
focus are those that create a new chat tab or window. I am not sure
whether you can actually avoid this as any new java window would
automatically grab the focus upon opening.

A possible way to avoid this would be to postpone opening the new dialog
until the user has clicked on either the sender's contact list entry or
our systray icon but the thing is that we don't currently support such
behaviour and not opening a chat window would actually mean ignoring an
incoming message ...

In other words, don't lose hope, we know about the problem and would
probably fix it one day (or we may even end up with a patch contribution
earlier ... who knows  )

Cheers
Emil
