Should I recommend

In recent weeks, I’m often asked for video conferencing tool recommendations.
I’d like to recommend Jitsi, but I just don’t know if that’s a good idea.

  1. I don’t know how many participants can handle smoothly. My experience is that WebRTC P2P video calls usually work well up to ~4 participants with average HW and connection.

  2. As far as I understand, jitsi-videobridge is used to bundle streams for better scalability. But is this something optional or are streams always going through such a videobridge? Is that also the case on

The people asking me are not able to self-host Jitsi. I may be though.
However before making that effort, I’d like to understand if that’s even needed or if there’s public instances out there which work well for groups of 10-20 participants.

Any answers / clarifying links are welcome.

jitsi-meet use p2p mode only for 2 users.

no unless you want to rewrite half of the product. And as such it is used on

public instance ? free service ? you get what you are paying for. If there are sufficient resources available at the moment you connect and everyone has good connectivity and you don’t need any management capability (a band of brothers is the reference model), free instances are great.
