In recent weeks, I’m often asked for video conferencing tool recommendations.
I’d like to recommend Jitsi, but I just don’t know if that’s a good idea.
I don’t know how many participants meet.jit.si can handle smoothly. My experience is that WebRTC P2P video calls usually work well up to ~4 participants with average HW and connection.
As far as I understand, jitsi-videobridge is used to bundle streams for better scalability. But is this something optional or are streams always going through such a videobridge? Is that also the case on meet.jit.si?
The people asking me are not able to self-host Jitsi. I may be though.
However before making that effort, I’d like to understand if that’s even needed or if there’s public instances out there which work well for groups of 10-20 participants.
Any answers / clarifying links are welcome.
