Renaming to Jitsi. Step 1: The Site

#1

Hey all,

Yana has just completed the revamp of our site so that we will be able
to use it for Jitsi.

I'll activate it in about an hour or so and you'll all be able to have a
look (personally I love it and am very grateful to Yana for what she has
done).

Now ... there will be some havoc for a week or so

The application for example would remain available as SIP Communicator
for several more days.

The reason is that we would need a bit more time to prepare the auto
update procedures so that they would properly handle the change in the
name of the executables.

Also, we are currently applying for GSoC, together with Kamailio
(OpenSER) and SEMS. We are applying as Jitsi which is why we absolutely
need to change the site today.

Will update the list once the new site is up so stay tuned.

Cheers,
Emil

#2

Done!

Please visit http://jitsi.org and check it out.

Currently http://sip-communicator.org opens the same page. We'll replace
it with a forwarding page in the following days.

Cheers,
Emil

Hi Emil & Yana,

VERY nice homepage - congratulations!

I only missed the important point of protection of privacy as immediate "eye-catcher" on
the start site (encryption of IM/Audio/Video), as also these important features makes Jitsi
VERY unique now...

That's it. We are done. Builds are now being released under the Jitsi name.

We didn't find a simple way of making the installers do the switch
transparently (and we didn't have the time for the complicated way  )
so SIP Communicator users would now be seeing a dialog prompting them to
manually update to Jitsi. Once on the Jitsi builds, updates will
continue as before.

So, as I said, that's it. Feel free to spread the word now!

Hi Emil,

Done!

Please visit http://jitsi.org and check it out.

can you now at least change alpha with beta (or better RC)? It really
matters for many, alpha means very unstable that you barely can have the
application running more that 30sec. With that hard-printed in the mind of
people, one cannot convince potential users... Think that most of your
potential users are non-techies.

On the other hand, I am using Jitsi (SC) in a daily basis being very stable
for my needs, not to say it is one of the richest in feature softphones
regarding SIP (full communication options: voice, video, IM & presence).

That's it. We are done. Builds are now being released under the Jitsi name.

Not quite, there are still a couple of things like the IRC channel
#sip-communicator. Also jitsi conflicts sip-communicator due to the
man page not being renamed.

Unpacking jitsi (from .../jitsi_1.0-beta1-nightly.build.3381_i386.deb) ...
dpkg: error processing
/var/cache/apt/archives/jitsi_1.0-beta1-nightly.build.3381_i386.deb
(--unpack):
trying to overwrite '/usr/share/man/man1/sip-communicator.1.gz',
which is also in package sip-communicator
0:1.0-beta1-nightly.build.3364

We didn't find a simple way of making the installers do the switch
transparently (and we didn't have the time for the complicated way  )
so SIP Communicator users would now be seeing a dialog prompting them to
manually update to Jitsi. Once on the Jitsi builds, updates will
continue as before.

Build 3364 should have stayed on the server. People who try to update
now won't see the warning dialog. There wasn't much point in making a
warning dialog if it only stayed on the server briefly.

So, as I said, that's it. Feel free to spread the word now!

Now that it's beta I'll be spreading the word more.

Congrats on the progress.
James.

I manually downloaded Jitsi a few days ago (1.0-beta1-nightly.build.3371on Mac OS X 10.6.6) and dropped it into my application folder. After starting Jitsi it recognizes only one account as SIP Communicator still has all accounts shown (see pics attached). What did I miss?

I can confirm this. The strongly advertised 'alpha' label was off-putting to me and I hesitated a good bit before giving Jitsi a try. The one thing that comforted me in this decision was the impressive features page.

But, at the download page, it still says alpha built. CMIIW.

Emil,
thanks for having a look into the logs.
I don't know much about the structure Jitsi uses to access the SC-accounts but it seems that there is a different set of account for SC and Jitsi.
If I do changes on the account which is also available in Jitsi with SC, the changes are not reflected in the account if I open/edit it with Jitsi. Maybe that helps.

On this note... When is it leaving Alpha? I have about 20 people in our company using it in production right now. It is quite stable, other than the daily updates. Is there some goal needed before it goes beta?

I can confirm this. The strongly advertised 'alpha' label was

The one thing that comforted me in this decision was the impressive

Hey Dan, all,

Changing the version to beta is indeed something that we can do quite
easily. This won't require us to setup a parallel stable branch and
would still look less intimidating than alpha.

We'll do this today. Thanks for suggesting this!

can you now at least change alpha with beta (or better RC)? It really
matters for many, alpha means very unstable that you barely can have
the application running more that 30sec. With that hard-printed in
the mind of people, one cannot convince potential users... Think that
most of your potential users are non-techies.

On the other hand, I am using Jitsi (SC) in a daily basis being very
stable for my needs, not to say it is one of the richest in feature
softphones regarding SIP (full communication options: voice, video,
IM & presence).

Cheers, Daniel

The closing accolade seemed weird there. I've removed it. The png loads fine
for me though.

We recently changed the location of the site because of problems that we
were experiencing with the previous server. Maybe some of your DNS servers
haven't properly updated yet?

The site displays fine on all the browsers that I could lay my hands on
(Firefox, Chrome, Safari, IE) so I am not sure what could be going wrong

Cheers,
Emil

Nop, i've anything enabled and few days ago it was displaying just fine.
Maybe some compatibility issues with Chrome? Two CSS files were not
found...See attachment.
