[jitsi-users] Video freeze occurrence

#1

Hi Everyone,

We use Jitsi for our media communication. We have built our own application to record using chromium browser. It works beautifully! Nice job team. It is truly great work!
Randomly, we get an issue where the bridge is sending media. However, the recorder page is not displaying it. The audio is played. The video is not displayed. It eventually will be displayed. Sometimes, it takes 10 seconds and semitones 30 seconds. We use callstats, which is another great tool and thank you for integrating it.
The logs do not show any errors. Moreover, callstats show that media has been sent.

Did you encounter this issue? What do you recommend to resolve it?

Please find attached a screenshot of callstats when this happens. In this case, the first 40 seconds there was no video displayed then it started displaying. Th quality of the video is excellent when it comes. The rates look reasonable. Please note we don’t use simulcast.

Thanks,
Osama

Hi Osama,

We've been trying to track down and fix this kind of problems. Could you please gather some logs from Chromium and share them here. For verbose logging you can launch Chromium like this:

/Applications/Google\ Chrome.app/Contents/MacOS/Google\ Chrome --enable-logging=stderr --vmodule=*/webrtc/*=99,*/libsrtp/*=99,*=3

You can launch a script session (man script) to capture all of the output.

Thanks!

Best,
George

Hi,

We will work on enabling it and capture as many logs as we can. Did the latest stable release address some of these issues? Do you recommend moving to it?

Thanks,
Osama

Latest stable release of the JVB or Chrome? Using the latest JVB is highly recommended. As for Chrome, if this is the only problem that you’re having, then I would suggest to stick with it, or at least have a way to go back.

I mean the JVB. It is much better. We could see that. We plan to move shortly. I will keep you posted.

One follow up question: Is there a way to detect this scenario and alert the user? I mean we automatically know that video is not rendered and inform the user?

Thanks,
Osama

Hi,

A useful update: we upgraded chromium from version 57 to version 59. We have been testing it today. We typically get 0.1-0.5% issues with the frozen video (black screen). We did not today. We will continue testing tomorrow.
I cannot be 100% sure, but it is pointing to a Chrome 57 issue.

Thanks,
Osama

The past few Chrome releases have been quite challenging  54 was pretty rock solid and IIRC so was 56. Alas, with any new release there could be a new surprise!

Cheers,
