[jitsi-users] video calls securing

#1

Hi!

I read https://jitsi.org/Documentation/UserDocumentation - especially at
the end those links. Are there also secure video calls possible?

Or can I start also video during secured voice call?

Thanks,
Edmund

Jitsi supports both secure audio and secure video calls using SIP and
XMPP accounts, and its already working nicely!
You can also start first audio call and add video also during the call.

Register to any XMPP or SIP provider you like (Jitsi , add your
contact(s) of your partner(s) and try it out - both ends should use Jitsi.
(as far as I know Jitsi is the only client so far supporting
zRTP-encrypted audio & video calls over XMPP)
Jitsi registration wizard already includes preconfigured accounts for
IPPI and IPTEL (both using SIP) and a list of jabber servers (XMPP).

Previously one of the easiest way to use Jitsi was with your GMail, as
it was at the same time also an XMPP account.
You can still chat over GMail using Jitsi but with the recent change of
Google to their proprietary "Hangout" they dropped the open standard
support (xmpp extension jingle) to perform audio and video, so for the
long run using Gmail for audio/video with Jitsi will probably not work
anymore.

You may encounter problems if you are behind NAT (Jitsi delivers error
message if it cannot connect: "ICE failed") - in this case it is
recommend to register to the free XMPP service at jitsi.org, at least
one partner should use a jit.si account to avoid NAT problems
https://jitsi.org/index.php/Register/Register

Features and developmental progress of Jitsi are just great, try it out!

hope that helps,
MS

Very good! Thank you for information!

Thanks for pointing this out - I already registered. But how can I
search and add other users like in Skype?

for searching other XMPP/SIP users (search function like using in Skype):

you should already know their Jabber/SIP IDs, as far as I know there are
no search functions of XMPP and SIP contacts directly from the client
software (at least not from Jitsi, Pidgin, Adium etc), maybe the service
provider supports a search function on their website but personally I am
not aware of any...

So far I did not notice/perform any contact search for XMPP/SIP contacts
other than receiving contact IDs per email or people indicated their IDs
on their websites.

Once you know the Jabber-ID/SIP-ID you add them over the menu and a
popup window will appear if your partner accepts your contact request
(this works for XMPP accounts).
With SIP accounts I am not aware of such "authorization" for SIP, you
just add them to your list and call.

OK - I see. This is also almost OK. Sometimes it is useful and people
are used to search each other in Skype - so they are looking similar
functionality also in other IM-s.
