[jitsi-users] Spanish translation of 2.3 done, you can help other languages too! it's super-easy

#1

(sorry for cross-posting, but I thought posting this on the users list
was worthwhile to encourage users to help with translations too)

Hi there,

I'm pleased to report that between yesterday and today I've helped
finish the Spanish translation of Jitsi 2.3.
I would have helped earlier if I had known the web interface to do
translations was SO EASY!.

Two screenshots for the beginners, which are self-explaining:

http://pic.twitter.com/5bGibiITDB
http://pic.twitter.com/ePiKrM1rjE

Feel free to go to the following page, create an account, and then
once logged in, click on your language -if it shows less than 100%
completion-, and help!

http://translate.jitsi.org/projects/sip_communicator

After selecting your language, it is a matter of clicking on "Continue
translation" at the top-left of the screen, and you'll be shown one
string after another, and you can contribute your translation in the
text entry box below.

If you don't know some translation or you aren't sure, you can simply
skip to the next one by pressing the next button at the lower-right
corner of the screen.
Just make sure you include all the numbers between brackets or curly
braces as-is, as in the original string ie "user {0} wants to chat"
becomes in Spanish "usuario {0} quiere charlar", and so on.

Great job Emil on the translation interface (even if it's not a work
of yours, just setting it up is praiseworthy).

Just for the record, the languages that are closer to completion and
need less than 1200 strings translated are

Czech 376 left
Scottish Gaelic 464 left
Swedish 464 left
Bulgarian 878 left
Turkish 944 left
Ukrainian 1013 left
Russian 1117 left

Again, any help with the above languages is welcome :).
You don't need to be a programmer, translation is web-based

I'm pleased to report that between yesterday and today I've helped
finish the Spanish translation of Jitsi 2.3.

Awesome. We can also tackle Bulgarian fairly easily. Pavka want to give it a try?

Great job Emil on the translation interface (even if it's not a work

Actually that's not me either

First installation came from Martin Andre, then Ingo Bauersachs rebuilt it to work with the latest pootle.

So, Kudos, to those guys!

Right now the web interface shows 3 "Chinese" languages, but I'm not
sure if those mean regional dialects/variations or if any of these
imply "traditional Chinese".

Chinese (China)
Chinese (Hong Kong)
Chinese (Taiwan)

Someone else with more knowledge than me might be able to comment....

Speaking about translations...
Japanese, Norwegian, Russian, Finnish and Dutch are some launguages
that are halfway through it, and surprisingly nobody seems to have
picked up the job. :-/

I spent the weekend messaging over Twitter different Japanese and
Dutch Java programmers and Java User Groups telling them "the
Jitsi.org project would welcome help translating Jitsi 2.3 to
{language}. All web based, no programming knowledge needed" followed
by a pointer to the Jitsi translation page, hoping to get a RT, but
out of about 8 or 10 only 2 did so. :-/ Perhaps they didn't know me so
they thought the message was a bit intrusive? Or perhaps they didn't
know Jitsi to begin with? Don't know. I was hoping for an enthusiastic
RT....

There must be something I did wrong in my message and communication... :frowning:

Is the brazilian portuguese that different that its worth maintaining a separate translation?

If I compare en-us with en-uk than its mostly z vs. s (analyze/analyse) and o vs. ou (color/colour).

Freundliche Grüsse,

There are several words that are diferent in Brazil and Portugual.

Just some few samples:

US/Brazil/Portugal

File/Arquivo/Ficheiro

Screen/Tela/Ecrã

Mouse/Mouse/Rato

Box/Caixa/Boceta

Furthermore when I select “Portuguese” language most of words are displayed in US English.

I wan´t help you with maintain a complete Brazilian Portuguese translation.

Is the brazilian portuguese that different that its worth maintaining a separate translation?

If I compare en-us with en-uk than its mostly z vs. s (analyze/analyse) and o vs. ou (color/colour).

As far as I can see here: http://translate.jitsi.org/pt_BR/ that translation is already 100% done.

Great job Emil on the translation interface (even if it's not a work
of yours, just setting it up is praiseworthy).

Actually that's not me either

First installation came from Martin Andre, then Ingo Bauersachs rebuilt it to work with the latest pootle.

So, Kudos, to those guys!

I'll take a look on the weekend if it is possible to translate a language based off an existing one. In any case, Pavel, make sure you actually look at the sip_communicator pootle project and not the general overview. I sincerely doubt that portuguese (no matter what flavour) was ever fully translated.
