[jitsi-users] Sound issues

#1

Hello Mailing list,

I'd like to report a sound issue. I think it has already been described here [1], but I'd like to explain my issue as well.
I use Jitsi 2.8.5426 on Debian 8.2 stable.

My debian set up works fine as far as sound is concerned (youtube, vlc, etc. have zero problem)

When I call someone with jitsi, he can listen to me with very good sound.
I can hear that person too but the sound is clicking a lot. It's barely usable.
The video works fine.

Here are some information about my system

root@debian:/home/stefan# cat /etc/debian_version
8.2
root@debian:/home/stefan# uname -a
Linux debian 3.16.0-4-686-pae #1 SMP Debian 3.16.7-ckt11-1+deb8u5 (2015-10-09) i686 GNU/Linux
root@debian:/home/stefan# lspci | grep Audio
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801JI (ICH10 Family) HD Audio Controller

I don't think the problem is related to network because it is all the same whether the person I talk to is 20m or 3000km from me (yes we tested from two distant locations :-))

I've checked the source code quickly but I can't find where the sound stuff is. Any pointer ?

Besides this issue, Jitsi is very compelling.

Regards,

Stefan

The audio systems are in libjitsi:
https://github.com/jitsi/libjitsi/tree/master/src/org/jitsi/impl/neomedia/pulseaudio
https://github.com/jitsi/libjitsi/blob/master/src/org/jitsi/impl/neomedia/device/PulseAudioSystem.java

https://github.com/jitsi/libjitsi/tree/master/src/org/jitsi/impl/neomedia/portaudio
https://github.com/jitsi/libjitsi/blob/master/src/org/jitsi/impl/neomedia/device/PortAudioSystem.java

You might want to try switching between those two in the settings anyway to see if one works better than the other.

Besides this issue, Jitsi is very compelling.

Thanks!

Regards,

Stefan

Some news on that issue.

I've noticed that if I turn off the microphone input on the Jitsi "conversation"
UI, then the sound I receive becomes clear again. If I turn the mic on again,
the sound I receives start clicking again.

So my problem seems tied to the duplex nature of the communication...

Can you try it with headphones to rule out any feedback issues?
