[jitsi-users] Soem issues

#1

Hello,

today I've tested jitsi a lot with 2 Windows Computers in a local LAN and
found some strange issues:

Registrar less SIP:

1.There is no presence info, although chat, call and video works.

2. Sound Quality: One of the 2 PC's has an audio output Problem with jitsi.
When ringing or during the call it sounds like the output is closed to be
immediately open by the next sound, this producers an annoying crackle.
Since the Audio output is default connected to a SPDIF output this is heard
very clearly. Using a different Sound output (with less good quality) this
is far less annoying. There is no problem on this PC with other Programs
with Sound output. This audio problem is particular bad when using registrar
less sip my subjective feeling is that it gets "better" if connection goes
via internet.

SIP via iptel.org:

  3. the audio stream is going via the iptel.org server. My understanding
was, that the audio stream will connect directly between the 2 PC's.

I have a alg sip firewall between the LAN and internet (Cisco ASA) but in
this particular case this should not make a difference.

Jingle Test: Two account's on jabber.org trying to connect via jitsi:

4. Only chat is possible. I see no presence information and (maybe
therefore no buttons to call or video or screensharing)

  5. found gabble.echo@test.collabora.co.uk , I'm getting presence info, I
can get called, BUT no videome.

Can you please help?

RegistrarLess accounts are mostly meant for testing and helping
developers debug when no servers are around. Therefore, even though I
agree it makes perfect sense, it is hence unlikely that we will spend
time making p2p presence work in this mode.

Of course, as always, a patch would be most welcome.

2. Sound Quality: One of the 2 PC’s has an audio output Problem with

We do open and close the device as we need it. This hasn't been a
problem with other devices so far and I am afraid I can't see why it
would be in your case.

SIP via iptel.org:

  3. the audio stream is going via the iptel.org server. My
understanding was, that the audio stream will connect directly between
the 2 PC’s.

This is normal. iptel.org, as well as the majority of the SIP servers
currently deployed on the public internet, would put themselves on the
media path in order to resolve NAT traversal issues.

Jingle Test: Two account’s on jabber.org trying to connect via jitsi:

4. Only chat is possible. I see no presence information and (maybe
therefore no buttons to call or video or screensharing)

Are both participants using Jitsi? Are they both in each other's contact
list? If the answer to both of the above questions is "yes", could you
please mail us your log files?

  5. found gabble.echo@test.collabora.co.uk
<mailto:gabble.echo@test.collabora.co.uk> , I’m getting presence info, I
can get called,

You can get called? Hey I didn't know gabble.echo had such a feature. I
thought it would only answer incoming calls. How do you make it call you?

BUT no videome…

Right, I don't think that service supports video.

Hope this helps,
Emil

Zdrawei Emil,
thanks for your quick answers.

Ad 1.) I was just wondering and if it is not implemented that's OK.

Ad 2.) The PC I used for this test is my multimedia PC connected to a Dolby surround system via SPDIF. I can switch the sound Output also thru HDMI to a flat screen TV. The sound output is connected to a SPDIF and default setting is not 2 ch stereo but Dolby surround. The difference is that the Dolby Decoder always needs a not really noticeable delay to start decoding, regardless if it is the decoder of the surround system via SPDIF or the one via HDMI (2 totally different systems). When you open and close the device as needed on every open and close there is a small additional delay producing the "bad" audio quality. I hope I was able to convince you why it is a better idea to open the device only once, at least during a call.

Ad 3.) Thanks, I did not know that. But this is very bad for bandwidth ... I hope jingle is better and we get it work...

Ad 4.) Yes, yes; Logs attached...

Ad 5.) the chat window is your command line: !help !version !callme !videome ... I thought that when there is a !videome command it will support video

Thanks a lot
Ognian
