[jitsi-users] Single-window layout

#1

Hi,

how difficult would it be Tod implement a single-window layout for Jitsi, with the contact list on one side and chat/video next to it? (Comparable to what Skype and Gajim have)

Cheers,
Nik

I for one like a multiple layout as I can have the userlist hidden (not
even in dock/taskbar) and only have conversations in taskbar/dock. Skype in
windows must always live in your taskbar if you want it active.

you name it: personal preference.

Background: We are starting a campaign in Germany to move school kids
who use proprietary (and thus dangerous) products over to free standards
that protect their privacy. This is very important (I will post more
about that to the list later) as, after the PRISM disclosures and all,
using Skype™ and the like can have serious impact on the life of the
children.

Most of the switch may work great, but - believe it or not - due to the
very nature of 11-16 year-olds, losing something like the neat
single-window layout of Skype™ can be a blocking issue for them (and has
been named as a blocking issue by some).

I do not like it either - but if it is a simple change that can bring
the young community forward, I will happily accept the challenge if
someone mentors me.

It already is implemented: set the property
net.java.sip.communicator.service.gui.SINGLE_WINDOW_INTERFACE_ENABLED=true
in your configuration file.

I remember Yana saying that it has bugs (but I don't know what exactly) and I guess this is the reason it has currently no UI option to enable it.

Cool, thank you!

@Eike: Can you test it ;)?

net.java.sip.communicator.service.gui.SINGLE_WINDOW_INTERFACE_ENABLED=true

Works

quite well for me, only annoyance was that it was impossible to
resize the window at first (made it quite small before turning
singlewindow on) and obviously you do not have an extra menu for the
chat window.
