[jitsi-users] Setting up JItsi for Google Talk and Google voice

#1

When I attempt to connect via GoogleTalk to a GMail/Google account of
another user who is not using Jitsi, it rings at the other end, but I
get a message that says, "Candidate has address of zero" and the call
fails. If the other party calls me I get a fleeting notice that there
is an incoming call, but then it disappears. ¿What to do?

How do I set up my Google Voice account on Jitsi so that I can call
phones and recieve calls?

#2

Additional information with my difficulties with GoogleTalk on Jitsi.
Sometimes when I call over GoogleTalk, I may also get the error "could
not establish connecton (ICE failed)". And when the other party calls
me from their Gmail account, I simply get a flash of notification that
there is an incoming call, and then nothing.

I am using Jitsi with Linux Ubuntu 11.10. In the telephony settings
ont the Gmail/GoogleTalk account in Jitsi, I have tried talk.google.com
and voice.google.com

Thanks for your help

#3

Let see if I am doing this right. I am attaching the log file for the
following attempts:

First, I attempted to connect via GoogleTalk to a GMail/Google account
of another user who is not using Jitsi. It rang at the other end, but I
got a message that says, "Candidate has address of zero" and the call
failed. Next the other party called me and I got a feeting notice that
there was an incoming call, but then it disappeared.

Then I called a telephone in the US using GoogleTalk with
voice.google.com as the setting. The other party said it rang there,
but when he answered, he heard nothing. On my computer with Jitsi, it
said "connecting" then "disconnecting", then it automatically redialed
and got stuck on "Connecting"

Than you for your help

Hi,

Let see if I am doing this right. I am attaching the log file for the
following attempts:

First, I attempted to connect via GoogleTalk to a GMail/Google account
of another user who is not using Jitsi. It rang at the other end, but I
got a message that says, "Candidate has address of zero" and the call
failed. Next the other party called me and I got a feeting notice that
there was an incoming call, but then it disappeared.

Do you use Gmail web version of GoogleTalk client ?

We will look at the logs soon.

Then I called a telephone in the US using GoogleTalk with
voice.google.com as the setting. The other party said it rang there,
but when he answered, he heard nothing. On my computer with Jitsi, it
said "connecting" then "disconnecting", then it automatically redialed
and got stuck on "Connecting"

To use voice.google.com service, do _not_ add anything in the telephony tab of your account and type the number with prefix (i.e. +33 xxxxxxxxx). Also ensure you have google credits to call. Note that the first connecting/disconnecting is normal.

When loading the windows package, do I have to still down load ants, and the JDK development environment?

Forgive me I am new to Jitsi.

We should probably add a note in the telephony tab that explains it in more detail and that says it is not necessary for using Google voice.

Thank you for your response, Seb.

I am not sure if I understand what you mean by Gmail web version of
GoogleTalk client, but the most probable answer is yes. That is, I can
enter my Gmail account, and since I also have a GoogleVoice account, on
my Gmail page I use the "Call phone" option to call US telephone
numbers. I can also select someone else with a Gmail account to send a
text message or have a voice conversation from computer to computer.

I have removed voice.google.com from the telephony page of the gmail
account, leaving those spaces blank. The problem connecting persists.

Thank you for your help

Hi,

Sorry I mean "Gmail web version OR (and not of) GoogleTalk client. After reading your logs think you or the other peer uses Google Talk application. It seems that Google Talk client sent an error message in response of one message from Jitsi. We will try to investigate this week or the next.

For the google voice, I don't see any traces of a google voice call in the logs you sent. Can you make a google voice call and sent us the logs just after please.

Hi,

To use google voice, simply enter the phone number in the field with prefix number (typically for a french number I type +33xxxxxxxxx where xxxxxx is the phone number). To be sure you can suffix with @voice.google.com (for a french number: +33xxxxxxxxx@voice.google.com) and call with your gmail account (but normally it is not needed). Also be sure you have credits on your gmail account.

Again for better investigation, we need the logs of a failed google voice call.

Thank you, Seb.

I dialed a number according to your instructions. I am attaching the
log. As in times past, it goes: connecting--disconnecting, then it
dials again and gets stuck in connecting for a long time, until I
finally hung up.

Hi,

To use google voice, simply enter the phone number in the field with
prefix number (typically for a french number I type +33xxxxxxxxx where
xxxxxx is the phone number). To be sure you can suffix with
@voice.google.com (for a french number: +33xxxxxxxxx@voice.google.com)
and call with your gmail account (but normally it is not needed). Also
be sure you have credits on your gmail account.

Again for better investigation, we need the logs of a failed google

I am not sure if I understand what you mean by Gmail web version of
GoogleTalk client, but the most probable answer is yes. That is, I can
enter my Gmail account, and since I also have a GoogleVoice account, on
my Gmail page I use the "Call phone" option to call US telephone
numbers. I can also select someone else with a Gmail account to send a
text message or have a voice conversation from computer to computer.

I have removed voice.google.com from the telephony page of the gmail
account, leaving those spaces blank. The problem connecting persists.

We will look at the logs soon.

Then I called a telephone in the US using GoogleTalk with

To use voice.google.com service, do _not_ add anything in the telephony

first connecting/disconnecting is normal.

Thank you, Sebastien. Here is what I did.

I uninstalled the Jitsi stable version that I had and I installed the
version you told me. Here are the results using GoogleTalk from
computer to computer

When I make a video call out, I get a message "Unknown session
description type". Doesn't work.

When I make an audio call out, audio goes out (the other party hears
me), but audio does not come in (I do not hear the other party).

When the other party video calls me (video call in), there is audio in
and out, and video in but not video out, i.e., the other party hears me
but does not see me.

When the other party audiocalls me (audio call in), there is audio
(sound) in and out. It works.

Finally, I tried making a call to a telephone using GoogleTalk, but
could not figure out how to do it. (I have GoogleVoice, and from my
Gmail account I can call telephones, but did not see how to set it up on
and make it work on Jitsi.)

So we are making good progress but not there yet....

Two other things--one: once I made a video call, the video light on the
computer stayed on after I finished, even though I was not making a
video call but only an audio call.

The otheris that the notification sound when a call comes in is very
strange. It almost sound like someone is vomitting. (Forgive the
analogy.)

What is the next step? Thank you for your help

#20

Thank you. I am sending the logs for each of the attempts using
GoogleTalk. The results are different from yesterday, I don't know why.
I believe I am using the same nightly-build as yesterday

1. When I make an audio call out, now it works both ways. HOoray.
Yesterday audio out worked (the other party hears
me), but audio in did not--(I did not hear the other party). Today it
works both directions. See attached log.

2. When the other party video calls me (video call in), yesterday there
was audio in and out, and video in but not video out, i.e., the other
party hears me but does not see me. Today there is video in and out,
audio out but not audio in. That is, I see and hear the other party,
but the other party sees me but does not hear me. See log.

3. When the other party audiocalls me (audio call in), there is audio
(sound) in and out. It works. See log.

4. When I make a video call out, yesterday I got a message "Unknown
session description type". Today I don't get that message. Instead it
is the same as video call in, i.e., video in and out, audio out but not
audio in. That is, I see and hear the other party, but the other party
sees me but does not hear me. See log. Another item is that beneath
the video image there is an icon for showing or hiding local video. It
doesn't work

5. I tried incoming audio call again. This time audio out worked, but
not audio in. See log with F in name

6. I tried incoming video call again. This time video and audio out
worked, but neither video nor audio in. See log with F in name

7. Finally, I tried outgoing video call again. Outgoing video and audio
worked, but incoming video was bad, sound was bad, and Jitsi froze so I
could not get the archive log. I could exit Jitsi even using the System Monitor, so I had to shut down the computer and reboot.

When I rebooted I tried a phone call using your instructions:

In the main window, type your number (with the country phone prefix (+34
for spain)) in text field, then click on the small phone left from the
cross (in the same text field). If you have more than one telephony
account (SIP, several XMPP/Gmail account), choose the Gmail account you
want (and have credits to call).

I called an 800 number in the US and the sound was intermittent.
Then I called a private party, and the sound was good. The
first call had almost no echo. The second call had more echo.
IN neither case did it give a tone when it was ringing the other
party. So this sounds basically like a success. Attached is the
        log.

Finally, to say that I have been doing these tests with two computers at
home. I say that in case that affects the internet speed and therefore
the quality. Supposedly the internet speed here is 2GB.

Thank you for your help with this. I believe the solution is close.
