[jitsi-users] secure channel sometimes delayed, sometimes not established at all

#1

Hello

Usually when I initiate a voice call with someone (using XMPP accounts
with jit.si) the call is established, I can immediately hear the other
party, but they cannot hear me until a few (max. 10) seconds later,
when the "lock" icon switches to "locked". Presumably Jitsi is not
sending any audio/video down the line before it can establish a secure
channel which is commendable, but how does that explain the fact I can
hear the other party just fine?

Also, on 10% of the calls I've had so far (i.e. 2 out of 20) the
"lock" icon has remained unlocked throughout the call. I understand
this to mean that a secure channel has somehow failed to be
negotiated. Is there anything I can do at that point to diagnose the
problem? What is the suggested response? Hang up and re-dial?

Thanks

Alex

Hey Alex,

This was discussed on dev some time ago. The security negotiation does
not block media. Security packets however are sent (asynchronously)
together with the first RTP packets. If the ZRTP exchange fails to
complete that's because the packets aren't reaching the far end (or the
other way around) and if they aren't then, chances are, the media
exchange would fail too.

This could be caused by many reasons and we'd need to have a look at the
logs to know exactly what is going on. Feel free to send them over
(although I can't promise we'd be able to look at them in the following
week or two).

Cheers,
Emil
