[jitsi-users] persistent splash screen

#1

Hi!

I noticed that since some days I get at every boot a splash screen from
Jitsi (Jitsi auto starts after logging in) which keeps hanging at the
step "Ippi account registration wizard". I can get it away by right
clicking on the sys-tray icon of Jitsi.
Jitsi 2.5.5044 on Ubuntu 13.10. Not sure if that is a bug...

Thanks
Simon

Hi Emil,

I've experienced this on Windows 7 as well with nightly builds. It doesn't
matter much to me, though.

Hey Emil,

splash screen is a good feature because java applications' starts are not so instantaneous .

Users keep on click many times if they realize the software is not starting and having a progress bar may keep them calm  and show that the start process is going on.

So please to consider to keep this function in jitsi, the actual implementation maybe was buggy in early versions but on latest 5046 is working great and kill itself when jitsi is ready to go.

Thanks,

Mark ( mrK )

An alternative would be to try to make the start more instantaneous,
removing the need for a splash screen.

This is wrong. I just tested it with 5046 and the splash screen is still
persistent for me.

Hi,

a splash screen wouldn't require a so big amount of resource . That's not an account's job removing a bit here and add a little there. To speed up the start up process needs an optimization on the code of both jitsi and mainly on the java virtual machine : are you available to do it ? I don't own a so much skills on programming so i cannot in reasonable human time.

To avoid flame and keep the discussion in polite forms, please don't say others are wrong that's not the best of respect .

In my case (linux deb 64) , splash screen is working like a charm and leaves no trace after done its job.

I have tested latest builds and it failed just in a couple of builds , i'm available to send you in private a record of start process to satisfy your faith

Regards,

Mark ( mrK )

Hey folks,

Just so you know: we are all agreeing that starting the application
earlier would be better than a splash screen. We will work on that
when we move to our new Chromium based interface. This would likely
take a few months though, so until then, the splash is the best we've
got to indicate the application is starting.
