[jitsi-users] only grey area instead of video

#1

Hi,

I'm trying video chat with a Windows XP Jitsi and a Pidgin on Debian and two
jit.si accounts. In the pidgin window I see my own and the remote video but on
windows I see only my own (small) video and a grey area instead of the remote
video.

Any thoughts? The logs are here:

Folks

I gather that one can use Jitsi to communicate directly with other Jitsi
users, much like there is direct communication between Skype users. But
I find no instructions anywhere on how to set that up and how it works.
Could you tell me?

I like very much what I have found with Jitsi. I was thinking that some
simple, upfront instructions on use would be very helpful. For example,
my question above. Another example, how to use it for GoogleVoice. (I
now know that it is necessary to put the number in the little window
above the contact list....). Another example, which codecs to
use--originally, when I left all of them checked in audio, communication
didn't work. Another example, what is the highest band-width possible
and/or desirable for optimizing video communication.

Thank you and congratulations for your good work.

Paul

There's nothing special about jitsi users over others. You add people
to your contact list and it will just work.

Yup, what Andrew said.

Same thing for direct communication. Just call someone and if there's a
possibility Jitsi will find a way to make the communication go directly
end to end.

Emil

I've seen in the info window, that 90% of the video data was lost since one of
the machines only had mobile broadband. I finally figured out, how to manually
reduce the bitrate of x264 encoding in pidgin. Now the question is, whether
jit.si or pidgin is to blame that the bitrate was not reduced automatically.

Thanks for the replies. My knowledge is simple. When I add a contact, first I am asked to select an account. How do I identify a jitsi account? Is it xxx@jitsi.org or is it xxx@jit.si or what? Then I am asked to give an ID. I guess once I know the format of the jitsi account I can know the format of a jitsi ID for the person I want to contact, right?

And about using GoogleVoice. I tried adding an account in the form [phone number]@voice.google.com but when I clicked on it, it didn't dial the number. I had to insert the number in the window, using muy GoogleTalk account. That is a disadvantage since I can't take advantage of the contact list to store numbers.

Thanks for your help

Paul

Jitsi does not implement automatic reduction of the bitrate.

Also, when I want to add Jitsi as an account, the first thing it asks me
is to select a network. What network do I use to add Jitsi as an
account?

I think I need a step by step instruction for adding a jitsi account. I
went to "add new account". I chose XMPPas the network. Then I selected
"create new XMPP account" and that is as far as I got. Attached is a
screenshot of my attempt to add a jitsi account and the error messages I
got.
