[jitsi-users] New Jitsi User, Unable to connect

#1

I recently downloaded Jitsi for the first time.

I've tried connecting using a gmail address, and that failed.

I then created a new XMPP account at the jit.si registration web page, and
tried connecting using that, but I'm still unable to connect.

In case it was a matter of my ISP blocking some ports, I also tried
connecting over a VPN, but I was still unable to connect.

Can anyone help me troubleshoot?

#2

Yes, you need to tell us your operating system (ie Win7 64 bit, or
WinXP or Ubuntu Linux or Mac OS X), what ISP are you using** and if
its a residential setup or are you behind a corporate firewall?

(**is it cable modem broadband, DSL, a 3G modem plugged via USB, fiber
connected via Ethernet router, or what).

And more importantly: do you have any firewall installed on your PC?

Without the above info, we can only imagine what you have...

Sure, thanks.

I'm using the latest version for OS X (2.2.4603.9615). My ISP is Comcast in
the U.S., and it's a residential connection. I don't have any special
firewall software installed on my machine, though I am behind a wireless
router.

do you mind getting into your OSX networking config and your router
and trying OpenDNS?

First take note (or screen capture, or print screen) your current DNS
config values in case you want to restore that later.

It doesnt hurt and might actually give you a better DNS service with
added privacy than your ISP....

Primary DNS 208.67.222.222
Secondary DNS 208.67.220.220

Depending on your wifi router setup you might ned to change it both on
the router and your system too.

Then see if it makes a difference. Also make sure you have your old
config at hand before making any changes.

FC
PS The latest Java runtime for OS X 10.7.3 or higher has been released
today (Java 7 update 40) It includes Retina display support.
and is a recommended update, if you want to see if it makes a
difference wrt Jitsi, get it from
http://javadl.sun.com/webapps/download/AutoDL?BundleId=80806

Hey Fernando,

Thanks for the tips. Unfortunately, I tried upgrading to the latest Java
runtime and switching to OpenDNS (confirmed at
http://www.opendns.com/welcome/), but neither resolved the issue. Anyone
have a suggestion about what to try next?
