[jitsi-users] Limitation of Number of Participants Per Conference Per Case

#1

Hi Guys,

I saw it mentioned that for video conference max limit is between 8-12
participants. It makes sense as it directly depends on participants
network/bandwidth.

Case#1: Audio Only Conference
What is call limit for audio only conferences - Since videoBridge does
mixing for audio streams and send single mixed stream to each participant.
How many participants/conference can it handle? Would it work for
participants numbering 25, 50, 100 or more?

Case#2: Single Video Broadcast

In case of one participant doing video and rest of them stay on audio only.
How many participants can it connect ? Since there will only be two streams
1 Video and 1 Mixed Audio. What can be the max capacity of participants?

Also is there any hard-limit on video-bridge for number participants it can
support over all or per conference?

Regards,
JSZ

Seems like I asked a bit too generic questions may be that is why didn't
secure a reply from community. To narrow it down:

Do we have a limit on number of audio participants ? in case if we intend
to use it only for Audio for some cases.

There are no hard coded limits. The point at which problems will start appearing is hard to predict, because it depends on many different variables -- what clients are connected, their networks, the server, the server's network, etc.

A note on mixing audio: the bridge supports this, but it is not used in jitsi-meet (there audio is forwarded, just like video).

Hi Boris,

Thanks for clarification.

Regarding mixing, does lib-jitsi-meet also not allow audio mixing though
some param/flag - I skimmed though it but couldn't find.

The would be something that the entity which controls the bridge (jicofo in the case of a jitsi-meet conference) has to enable. Jicofo doesn't currently support it.

So audio-mixing in general is not part of plan either?

I guess in case of JiGaSi it does it, so can't we utilize that?

Jitsi-videobridge has a mixing mode, we just don't use it because we find that forwarding works better for the use-case of jitsi-meet (lower delay, easier lipsync, much less expensive CPU-wise for the server).
