[jitsi-users] Jitsi not search contact in gmail account

#1

Jitsi suddenly does not read contacts from my gmail account . any more
passes . Gmail seems to have changed something because I do not work
in any version of Jitsi

Anyone else happens this.

#2

Hi,

The api we use to access google contacts has been deprecated and now
it is stopped. See the message here:
https://developers.google.com/google-apps/contacts/v3/
Seems the googlecontacts impl needs an update.

Hi,

I'm not aware of anybody working on this, so any contribution is
welcome. Jitsi will migrate to it, but it depends on the free time of
the devs.

Hey damencho,

Can you give me some hints on how I can recognize that this fails and
where I can most clearly see the effect of failing communications?
In general, a bit of context.

Hi,

I create google talk account (which enables google contacts by default for
this contact) and I'm searching for a string that I have it in my google
contacts and the contact should be shown in the contactlist under group
with the name of the account.
But in the logs I see the following exception:

Okay, so this is all there is to it. That's easier than I expected, for
some reason.

Now to figure out how to make the Google client libraries work with
OAuth2. For some strange reason there is the set of Google OAuth2
related documentation and libraries, and there's the set Google Contacts
documentation and libraries. And the intersection of those seems to be
the empty set :-/ (i.e. Google Contacts does not have anything related
to OAuth2, and everything I find on OAuth2 library supports seems to
denounce the existence of Google Contacts.)

I haven't been able to find a newer client library for Contacts either ...
Anyways ... this is going to take some time ...

Hey Danny,

Yes I think this one is the older lib which we are using:
https://github.com/google/gdata-java-client
And the new one to use is:
https://github.com/google/google-api-java-client
And there is no intersection between them. I was also searching for quick
example to access contacts, but without any success.

The old one has contacts parsing in it, and as I understand in the new api
its only for accessing data. There are some libs for parsing the data, but
contacts parsing is not one of them. These are my quick observations till
now

Thanks for confirming this. I had the same impression after googeling
and experimenting for a bit.
Unfortunately just setting an Authentication header with the bearer
token does not do the trick either.

I'll dive a bit more into this upcoming weekend (hopefully) and see what
I can do. Reading the contacts isn't the hardest thing in the world, but
I would prefer to keep with original APIs if possible.

We'll see ...

Hey Danny,

Yes I think this one is the older lib which we are using:

And the new one to use is:
https://github.com/google/google-api-java-client
And there is no intersection between them. I was also searching for
quick example to access contacts, but without any success.

The old one has contacts parsing in it, and as I understand in the new
api its only for accessing data. There are some libs for parsing the
data, but contacts parsing is not one of them. These are my quick
observations till now

Okay, so a bit of an update here …

I discovered that the latest version of the GData library does in fact have support for OAuth2. It's all a bit vague with Google having some of GData feature set deprecated while for others it's still the primary API etc.

I have a working prototype, so I managed to get that far. Now I need to fine tune error handling (which is made quite difficult by the library) and find some way to make an acceptable UI for parts of the initial OAuth2 access approval process. It should only require a manual action once and after that Jitsi should be able to manage on its own.

@damencho: Can you check with whoever has a Google account preferred for this. We need to generate a client id and key and register an application (for example "Google Contacts plugin for Jitsi") that I can use in the code once the OAuth2 registration process is functioning. I don't need it just yet, as I'm currently getting the tokens manually. :-P
