[jitsi-users] Jitsi does not start on Windows

#1

Hi there,

Jitsi 2.9.5516.0 suddenly is hanging during startup. I see the process
in the task manager, but no splashscreen, tray icon or smth else ever
appears. Can it be it hangs checking for a new release on the nightly
channel?

Sorry to bother you again, but I have a similar problem.

Started nightly 5521 today, got a message that Outlook is not my
standard email program, if Jitsi shall set it as standard or not etc.
Problem is, I do not have Outlook, and I also did not configure any
address books inside Jitsi to be synchronized.

I checked the first box, do not ask again, is it?, but since then, Jitsi
wont start, again no window etc. In the logfile I got only:

2016-06-16 20:01:02.309 INFORMATION: [18]
org.jitsi.service.libjitsi.LibJitsi.info() Successfully started LibJitsi
using as implementation: org.jitsi.impl.libjitsi.LibJitsiOSGiImpl

From the logfile before I got:

2016-06-16 19:31:32.088 SCHWERWIEGEND: [18]
org.jitsi.impl.configuration.ConfigurationServiceImpl.error() Failed to
restore configuration file
C:\Users\Florian\AppData\Roaming\Jitsi\sip-communicator.properties
java.io.IOException: Failed to rename sip-communicator.properties.part
tosip-communicator.properties
2016-06-16 19:31:32.107 SCHWERWIEGEND: [18]
org.jitsi.impl.configuration.ConfigurationServiceImpl.error() Failed to
load the configuration file
java.io.FileNotFoundException:
C:\Users\Florian\AppData\Roaming\Jitsi\sip-communicator.properties (Das
System kann die angegebene Datei nicht finden)

and some similar to those...

Did I somehow trash my config files during this first startup?

Jitsi would access Outlook through MAPI (Outlook's API) if it is installed. Even if Outlook is not installed, there's some kind of MAPI shipped with Windows. That is most likely where the question to make Outlook the default came from. Using Outlook is enabled by default (Tools->Options->External contacts->Address book->Search in Outlook).

I checked the first box, do not ask again, is it?, but since then, Jitsi
wont start, again no window etc. In the logfile I got only:

I don't think the dialog came from Jitsi, but if it did, I don't know it.

The config service unfortunately isn't the most reliable :frowning:
Take a look at the directory C:\Users\Florian\AppData\Roaming\Jitsi\
If there's still a sip-communicator.properties.part, rename it back to sip-communicator.properties. Make sure Jitsi isn't running while doing this (kill all processes in the task manager).

Try using the database-based configuration service, especially if you have a big configuration with lots of accounts. You can enable it by creating an empty text file named .usedatabaseconfig (next to sip-communicator.properties).

Then sorry, unless you have Volume Shadow Copies (Volumenschattenkopien) active or another kind of backup, the config is lost :frowning:

OK no problem, I am a humble tester, and there are only 2 or 3 accounts
inside, no adress book etc so no data lost in fact. but could Jitsi
handle this case and create a new config file (after confirmation),
instead of going into some kind of Guru Meditation? (Remember Amiga 500...)

We don't know why this happens. The file-based config-service tries a transaction-like thing, by writing all properties to sip-communicator.properties.part, then when finished deletes sip-communicator.properties and renames sip-communicator.properties.part to sip-communicator.properties.

I've long been tempted to enable the database-based config service by default and I might just do that now... (I've used it at work and for myself for years now).

OK so where do I get a default properties file from? just reinstall?

You don't need one as there's no user config present after installation.

Hmm but still Jitsi does not start - how do I find out why?

Hmm but still Jitsi does not start - how do I find out why?

Is there anything in the log?
Any try deleting %localappdata%\jitsi (this is cached data only, no user configuration or anything)

This worked!

Now I can show you also the pop-up that started all the trouble, as it
appeared again :smiley:

When Jitis froze first, I checked the first option. Now I did not, and
Jitsi start yipiie. As I said, I never had Outlook installed on this PC,
nor did I configure anything in Jitsi to use the Windows Address Book etc...

I also have a backup of the dead settings dir in case you are interested.
