[jitsi-users] Jitsi Android App

#1

Hello!

Is the Jitsi Android App faster than just using Chrome/RTC? I am planning on using a Chromebox that supports Android Apps.

Hi list !

I am sad to see that the Jitsi App is only available in G-Store... Nothing in F-droid or anywhere else ?

Thanks to all

Hi,

The Android (and iOS, for that matter) app offers a mobile optimized experience. A ChromeBox sounds more like the desktop experience, so you are probably better off using Chrome directly. But why not both?! Try them and see what works best for you

Oh, the irony! :stuck_out_tongue:

Saúl,

Thank you for the time to respond! I was ask really about video performance. Would the app have better performance than Chrome ?

Do you mean "Jitsi" or "Jitsi Meet"?

Requesting "Jitsi" for F-Droid makes not much sense because the App is
not under development anymore.
https://desktop.jitsi.org/Documentation/FAQ#android should be updated.

If you mean "Jitsi Meet": yes, would be great to see Jitsi Meet on F-Droid!

Thx to all the devs!

It should have comparable performance. They both use libwebrtc.

Hi sj7, Hi list !

I was more writing about "Jitsi Meet".
Is it hard to port an App from GPlay to F-droid ?
There is a bunch of really good free software which is not available in F-Droid, that's a mess.
I think of Mattermost, for instance. Is there a problem with this repo ?
Cheers

HI lb,

my advice: contact these developers and ask for providing their apps in
F-Droid. I got some of my favorite apps this way to F-Droid and hope
Jitsi Meet developers will recognize this request for Jitsi Meet on
F-Droid as well.

As far as I understood there are 2 ways to provide APKs via F-Droid:

1. Directly via F-Droid: the source code has to be provided to F-Droid
under a F-Droid compiles and provides the APK; compare:
https://f-droid.org/wiki/page/FAQ_-_App_Developers

2. The dev can set up an own F-Droid repository which users can add via
F-Droid application as additional repository. This way is often used for
beta software like for example for the serverless messenger Briar (
https://briarproject.org/fdroid.html ).

Best regards

Dear F-Droid proponents,

The desire to have Jitsi Meet for Android released in F-Droid has been
duly noted at https://github.com/jitsi/jitsi-meet/issues/1290. I'd
encourage you to please "react" there with "+1" so that it's easier
for us to track how hot a feature request is.

Why is Jitsi Meet for Android not released in F-Droid yet? Because:
(1) We're releasing on both Android and iOS so taking on a third
release process requires additional and repetitive involvement on our
side.
(2) Having F-Droid build our young source code base in which builds
are not reproducible yet and (3) which also links with
Fabric/Crashlytics are not trivial matters.

(I personally want Jitsi Meet for Android on Amazon Appstore as well.)

Best regards,
Lyubo Marinov
