[jitsi-users] Jitsi and screen sharing one screen to several peers (1 to many)

#1

Hi,

Is it possible for one Jitsi client to share its screen so that several Jitsi users can view it (it's like a "conference" but regarding screen sharing)?
If so, how can it be done?

Thanks,

Vieri

I just realized after re-reading Jitsi's feature list that only audio is supported in Jitsi's "native" conference mode. So video and screen sharing isn't supported.
It's planned though but I don't know the status.

However, I was wondering if an easier solution could be found. Suppose Jitsi clients connect to an "Asterisk confBridge 10" or any other SIP video conferencing server, wouldn't it be "simple enough" to allow the Jitsi user to decide whether to stream its webcam video or it's desktop? I mean, if Jitsi can do "screen sharing" it means it can do video streaming of the desktop. So instead of streaming video from the webcam, couldn't it be possible to just stream the desktop in a "standard" video call to a SIP conference server? Maybe the Jitsi user could even switch between the 2 video stream types from within a call. Of course, the desktop video stream would be "read-only" in this scenario but that's good enough in most conferencing cases.

Can this be done?
Is it difficult to implement given all the goodies Jitsi already delivers?

Thanks,

Vieri

I just realized after re-reading Jitsi's feature list that only audio is

supported in Jitsi's "native" conference mode. So video and screen sharing
isn't supported.

Well, it kind of is, but it's still beta and it requires you to have
substantial bandwidth. That's the main reason for our work on the
conference bridge extensions.

It's planned though but I don't know the status.

However, I was wondering if an easier solution could be found. Suppose

Jitsi clients connect to an "Asterisk confBridge 10" or any other SIP video
conferencing server, wouldn't it be "simple enough" to allow the Jitsi user
to decide whether to stream its webcam video or it's desktop?

Yes, this should already just work.

I mean, if Jitsi can do "screen sharing" it means it can do video

streaming of the desktop.

Yes. It does mean that.

So instead of streaming video from the webcam, couldn't it be possible to

just stream the desktop in a "standard" video call to a SIP conference
server?

Yes, as I said, this is already how things work.

Maybe the Jitsi user could even switch between the 2 video stream types

from within a call. Of course, the desktop video stream would be
"read-only" in this scenario but that's good enough in most conferencing
cases.

In the Asterisk implementation, this is the role of the server. Current
switching is based on voice activity.

Hope this helps,
Emil
