[jitsi-users] Jabra Speak 510 with Jitsi

#1

Hi Emil,

I had a further email exchange with Jabra support.
Maybe you are interesetd to know what they say.

Can you suggest me any alternative device which succesfully interoperates
with Jitsi
(concerning call pick up and hang-up) ?

Bye.

Hi Ettore,

There isn’t a standard HID API that I am aware of, each softphone
manufacturer tends to use their own modified version. That side, the most
widely used API is the Microsoft Lync/OC settings, which may be worth a
try, but Jitsi has not had any communication with us that we are aware of
for testing or acknowledgment of compatibility.

Best regards

Hi Leilani,

First of all thank you for your quick response.

As far as I know, Jitsi added support for HID API in rel. 2.0 (current
release is 2.2), at least this is stated in the package documentation.

Can you confirm me that Jabra is using standard the HDI API ?

Thank you

Greetings Ettore,

Jitsi does not support HID commands for call control. Because the soft
phone does not currently support call control, there is no way to answer
the call from the Speak 510, or any other USB audio device you may try to
use with it. They would have to add HID device support to the Jitsi
softphone itself for that aspect to work.

I tried to play around with intercepting the HID commands sent by a Jabra device and could not really come up with the meaning of each command. That might be because I don’t know the USB-HID protocol, but I also think Jabra uses some proprietary commands inside the USB-HID protocol (and I’m not willing to install any software from Jabra to translate these commands into something else).

If there’s an open specification how these Jabra USB-HID commands work and someone has an example of how to get hold of the USB-HID events in Java (preferably without an additional library, but if so: cross-platform, open-source, non-GPL), I’d be willing to look at this near the end of the year.

If someone is willing to install additional software: maybe the application is able to send artificial keyboard shortcuts – which Jitsi is able to read.

Jabra doesn't support HID-USB, furthermore they haven't any open
specification of their interface (you need to sign a NDA for their SDK).

I was looking at the Plantronics Calisto 620 device as an alternative to
Jabra, and this seems to support HID-USB.
Officially they only support Windows and MAC/OS-X platforms, not Linux.

Are you aware of any experience of this device working with Jitsi running
on a Linux Debian platform?
Specifically, I also need to know if it is possible to answer an incoming
call from the external device, as my Linux pc will run as a kiosk and no
keyboard or mouse are available.

Bye.

If Jabra doesn’t support USB-HID then we’re out of luck anyway. Signing an NDA would be possible for a private branch, but not the open source variant of Jitsi.

I have no experience with Plantronics headsets with buttons. Even if they act as a normal USB-HID device, Jitsi currently won’t be able to deal with that directly. The commands would have to arrive as a keyboard shortcut, say like “F13”. To be certain, you’d have to try.
