[jitsi-users] installing on gentoo linux

#1

I'm having some trouble installing either the stable or nightly linux build on
my x86 gentoo linux system. I've tried as a normal user first and then root, I get the
same response each time:

$ ./jitsi-1.1-nightly.latest-linux.bin

SIP Communicator 1.0.draft - starting installation... please wait

^Cchmod: cannot access `$INSTALL_PATH/jre/bin/java': No such file or directory

It actually just hangs, then when I hit ctrl+c I get the last line (thus the
^C)

Here is some additional info regarding my java environment:

$ java-config --list-available-vms
The following VMs are available for generation-2:
*) IcedTea JDK 6.1.11.3 [icedtea-bin-6]

Any ideas of what to try?

Thanks,
John

The .bin packages come with their own jre (and this is what hangs and you interrupt with ctrl-c). You can try using your system's jre: get a .jar package[1] and run 'java -jar' on it.

This is just an idea, I don't know what the actual the problem is. For me it works on a similar setup -- gentoo x86, IcedTea JDK 6.1.11.3.

Boris,

Thanks for your idea. It worked.

umm, I think the whole problem was operator error. I guess I was expecting a
console install instead of a gui. The gui launched in another desktop and
since I wasn't expecting a gui I didn't look there. So there really never was
a problem.

Thank you again for the idea. It lead me to discovering my oversight.
