[jitsi-users] Feature Request: Easier route to check/verify fingerprints

#1

At the moment, in both the Windows and Android versions, I find that
bringing up fingerprints to check (whether my own or my contacts) is a
rather convoluted process that I have trouble remembering. On Android
for instance, it something like Menu - Settings - Chat Security - View
Fingerprint but I always forget and try the simpler way, i.e. via the
contact name, which I think will work before remembering. For Windows
it's Tools - Options - Security - Chat and then the window has to be
expanded to show the full fingerprint and it's very hard to read them
in this Window as they're not divided into four character blocks, so
it's very hard to keep track of where you've got to when checking
them.

What I would like to request is that instead, users can long press on
a Contact (or their own Account name) and have "Verify fingerprint" in
the popup menu.

For Windows, we could use right-click instead but as this doesn't seem
to currently be implemented for anything, rather than add this just
for one option it might be simpler just to add an extra icon, next to
Share desktop, for "Verify fingerprint". For verifying own
fingerprints, this could be an option under the Status dropdown as
this lists each account individually, so "Verify fingerprint" could be
added under "Set status message".

Thanks for reading.

Hey Derek,

As soon as you turn on OTR, you should be seeing an "authenticate
[Buddy Name]" link that allows you to get to the verification window
with a single click. This is not yet implemented for Android but will
get there eventually.

Also, the SMP authentication that Marin and George recently
contributed now allows you to verify a fingerprint by simply asking a
question. There is no longer a need for the user to actually read
their own fingerprint or that of their buddy.

Doesn't this provide what you are looking for?

Hey Emil

I did actually get a link when first connecting (in a test environment
between my phone and my tablet, with different users logged in each
obviously) using jitsi-android-166.apk so this initial verification
step isn't a problem.

What I'm talking about though is being able to check and/or verify
fingerprints (both my own and my contacts) at other times, whether
because it wasn't done correctly due to user error or bug at the stage
mentioned above, or just to bring up the fingerprints for
double-checking, or to show other users the fingerprints whilst
explaining to them how Jitsi works.

The SMP authentication method will greatly simplify the verification
step but won't have any effect on what I'm requesting I don't think
(once implemented, rather than fingerprints we'd be verifying
questions I guess but I'd still want to be able to easily view those
questions whenever I want).

Regards
Derek

(Sorry, only sent it to Users the first time by mistake!)
