[jitsi-users] does Facebook support jingle?

#1

Was hoping I would be able to have voice calls using Facebook as the
transport, but when I try to call a "friend", all I get is: "Failed to
create OutGoingJingleSession - xyz@chat.facebook.com does not support
Jingle or Google Talk"

Are voice calls over FB possible with Jitsi?

If not, what is the least painful way to switch my family (and
hopefully friends) from Skype to Jitsi for voice calls?

Thank you for a very promising piece of software!

Alex

Why don't you ask your contacts to use open source SIP or XMPP servers?
The limitations of F and G, regardless to their weird privacy policies,
are dismantling their legitimacy. http://fsf.org/fb

No they are not. Facebook blocks all IQs which prevents us from
establishing a session.

You can use many XMPP services such as http://jit.si or Google Talk.

Thank you, I am looking into using http://jit.si

A comment on usability:
The web registration form could be more intuitive. After creating an
account the page should say something like "Great, your new account
information is: Username xyz, server type: XMPP, server name jit.si
etc - now all you need to do is use this information with your
jitsi/other XMPP client" (or something similar)

Otherwise new users get a "new account successfully created" message
and then still see the signup page and wonder if they did something
wrong and they need to re-register, or where do they login now etc.

I will look into creating account for a few family and friends
(they're not exactly computer wizards so that would just confuse them)
and let you know how we get on.

Thank you for the help,

Alex

Agreed. One day we'll probably get to that, however, this is not
currently a priority to the project so it is what it is.

That said, you can also create jit.si accounts from within Jitsi itself.
You don't need to go through the web site.

Cheers,
Emil
