[jitsi-users] cannot establish XMPP audio/video call (ICE error)

#1

Hi,

I cannot use the audio/video call feature of Jitsi, as my partner and me
get the following error: "error: could not establish connection (ICE
failed)". We initially started with using both accounts as jabber.ccc.de
but now also tried without success with two accounts at jit.si. Both
jitsi clients are the latest stable version and have the default account
settings.
You can find the log files of the caller and the receiver at
<www.muenster.de/~simonh/jitsi.zip>.

Could anybody point out what we're doing wrong?
Thanks
Simon

I'm not a Jitsi developer and can't give you technical details, but I
had the same problem initially and solved it by using TURN to traverse
the NATs we were behind.

I think that ICE / STUN is supposed to also do this and there are
servers available (preconfigured) you can use to do that, but for me it
didn't work until I installed "turnserver" on my VPS and configured
Jitsi at both ends to use it. Finding this out was the "turning point"
which finally made voice/video calls with Jitsi work mostly flawlessly
for me.

I'm not sure whether this is an option for you, though, as you need a
server to run TURN on (or rent TURN services somewhere if that is
possible?). Maybe simpler options are also available, but I found none
that worked for me.

Yours,
Daniel

We'll have a look when possible. Thanks for uploading the logs.

Can you try a SIP call via ippi.com?

Hi Emil,

We'll have a look when possible. Thanks for uploading the logs.

Thanks for your help. Let me know if I can provide any further information.

Are you sure that UDP connectivity is allowed in both your networks?

I have to admit I'm not sure. (But on the other hand I have to say that
the expectation [specially of a non-technical person] is of course that
it just works out of the box [as skype]...)
I did check my router settings but couldn't detect any rules forbidding
it. But I will check again once I'm back home (I'm away atm and don't
have access to it). I haven't/can't check the router settings on the
remote host at all though.

Can you try a SIP call via ippi.com <http://ippi.com>?

I just created an account for me, BUT -- and here is the interesting
part -- I once again tried a XMPP audio call with my partner using the
jit.si accounts and the audio worked... It thus might be a problem with
the router at home (which I can try out again next week) as I don't
believe that just creating an ippi-sip account on one side on its own
will change anything. (still having the expectation that it should work
without having the need to fiddle around with router settings). I'll try
an video call tomorrow and come back to you latest next week when I'm
back home.

Thanks
Simon

I have had the same experience. Changing the network (I.e an open wifi rather than my work network) meant that the calls went through. Calling someone within the work network is also ok. So I guess it has to do with jitsis ability to get though some types of firewalls.
