[jitsi-users] Android Jitsi notifications

#1

I wonder if there might be a way to make Jitsi notifications more
noticeable to users?

At present it seems that if I get an incoming message, Jitsi just
makes a fairly quiet and easily missed sound and flags it in the
notification area but I fear this is very easy for people to overlook,
particularly if they're using tablets with no phone connectivity and
so not used to looking at the notification area for incoming text
messages. Even when she's using or near the tablet when a message
comes in, my Mum doesn't really notice the sound or thinks it's just
some random sound effect (perhaps it would be possible to make a
different, more intrusive sound when Jitsi doesn't have focus and keep
the current sound for when the chat screen is open, when it would be
annoying to have a loud sound on every received message). She also
finds it quite hard to pay attention to the notification area as it
gets filled up with so many messages from apps that mean nothing to
her, so it would be a lot easier if she could have a Jitsi message
notification box on the Home screen alongside her e-mail notification
box.

I recall my friend had an Android app which made text messages appear
on his Home screen and there's various apps that show the details of
incoming e-mails on Home. If a similar thing could be done with Jitsi,
so that any incoming message is displayed in a box on Home and when
this is tapped, it opens Jitsi into a chat with the contact, that
would be really great.

Regards
Derek

Sounds like what you want is a widget that can display recent incoming chat
messages.

Yep that's it, a widget, although ideally it should clear itself once
Jitsi is opened to the chat so that the widget doesn't show messages
from old chats, both for privacy reasons and so that it's obvious to
users when they have a new incoming chat.

Hi,

You're right about notifications. We'll start from improving sounds
and maybe a widget will be added in a later time. Here's the link to
the ticket which can be used to track the progress:
https://trac.jitsi.org/ticket/1271

Thanks, great to know you're looking at improving it.

I appreciate that a widget will be considerable extra work and might
not be possible any time soon.
