[jitsi-users] alternatives to jit.si with jingle support?

#1

Hi,

I'm about to prepare a jitsi installation for my mother in law and need to
pick an XMPP account that will last and is reliable.

As I understood, jit.si is considered a test server that could go away any
time? Do you know an alternative XMPP account provider that supports
videochat? I tried jabber.org, but it does not seem to work.

Is it? I am not sure who's considering it this way. We certainly aren't.
Of course we can't give any guarantees whatsoever and it might go for an
occasional restart every once in a while (and so does jabber.org for
that matter) but it's certainly not about to "go away any time'.

Do you know an alternative XMPP account provider that supports
videochat? I tried jabber.org, but it does not seem to work.

Indeed, I believe there's no relaying at jabber.org. This may have been
the reason for your problems.

Cheers,
Emil

There are plenty of servers at:
http://www.jabberes.org/servers/
https://list.jabber.at/
http://xmpp.net/

I think that audio/video communication method is direct (P2P) and has
nothing to do with the XMPP server, if I am not wrong.

There is a video on Vimeo by Damian Minkov which explains briefly how
RTP (Real-Time Transport Protocol) works.

Almost. ICE does try to establish a direct connection for media, and
that does work most of the time.

However, in some cases it doesn't, and in such cases you need your
servers to offer some relaying mechanism.

As far as I know jabber.org doesn't currently do so (although it did at
one point).

jit.si offers jingle relay nodes support.

Emil
