[jitsi-dev] Tweaking video quality

#1

Hi all,

Some of my users report that the video quality is notably better when using
Chrome 56, as compared to Chrome 58. I'm puzzled by this.

What are best practices to ensure an optimal video quality for any given
recording device?

Regards,

  Guus

#2

Hi Guus, what do your users mean by notably better video quality? Less freezes or higher resolution/frame rate? IIRC the new Chrome jitter buffer was introduced in Chrome 57 which will cause freezes, unless VP8 picid rewriting is enabled (it is enabled by default).

HI George,

Although I'd have to check, I was assuming that they are referring to the
image quality (resolution, but not in terms of image dimension).

How is the "VP8 picid" setting toggled?

Regards,

  Guus

Hi Guus, you control it with this: org.jitsi.videobridge.ENABLE_VP8_PICID_REWRITING=true

It’s enabled by default on recent versions of the bridge, so it’s fine if you don’t have it in your properties file.

Thanks. Any other settings that you can think of that can be used to tweak
the image quality?

Hi all,

I've received a bit of feedback that might be relevant. The degraded
quality (between Chrome 56 en 58) is only visible when the resolution is
locked to SD (which is done to prevent bandwidth issues). Does that ring a
bell?

Regards,

  Guus

Hi Guus,

What do your users observe exactly and what are the component versions when testing with Chrome 56/Chrome 58?

The SD resolution in both Chrome 56 and Chrome 58 should be 180p, so I don’t see this being the problem. Maybe your users observe artifacts in the thumbnails?

George

Hi Guus, have you been able to solve this issue somehow? Did your users stop complaining? I’d be interested to have a closer look if you were still experiencing quality degradation.

Cheers,
George
