[jitsi-dev] Suggestion: Single UI

#1

I'd love to see an optional single UI =)
Great work so far. Love it!!
Cheers, Rouven

#2

Thank you for the appreciation and the feedback, Rouven!

Could you please elaborate on the subject of "single UI"? If you're
refering to Jitsi's UI running in a single window, then you might want
to add net.java.sip.communicator.service.gui.SINGLE_WINDOW_INTERFACE_ENABLED=true
to your sip-communicator.properties.

#3

That is exactly what I was looking for, now I love Jitsi even more.
I think, this should be in the Options. Cheers, Rouven

Is this does, what I think it does, this should be in the UI options. And after being thoroughly tested it could potentially be a new default. Having windows all over the place isn’t really handy. And I think Jitsi would benefit a lot for a single UI.

Lyubomir: could you post a detailed how-to for making this work on OS X?

Best, steve

From Jitsi go to Menu --> Preferences... --> Advanced --> Property Editor. Click the button "I am aware of the risks". Then click "New". Insert in name net.java.sip.communicator.service.gui.SINGLE_WINDOW_INTERFACE_ENABLED and in value true. Hit OK, restart and voila. I think this applies not only for OS X but for all platforms.

Okay it may be possible, BUT how can a "regular" user ever find
something like this ... Is jitsi a program meant for freaks or for
normal users?! cheers.

Hey Rouven,

This property is not exposed through the UI because the single UI mode is not actively maintained at the moment and has some problems. That's why it is not advertised, but we tell anyone how to try it out if they ask for it.

1. Did you restart Jitsi?
2. Did you edit the properties file directly? If so, try doing it from within the program. I tried directly but then at restart Jitsi had overwritten the ~/Library/Application Support/Jitsi/sip-communicator.properties (OSX) back to what it originally was.

I was but apparently not recent enough. I've updated now and see the
Property Editor, thanks.

I'd prefer it if the single UI had the chat box on the left, rather
than the right as at present though. I'm used to Jitsi's window being
aligned with the right-edge of my monitor and it just feels awkward
having the contacts list sticking out on the left. Also, when chatting
it's more convenient to have the chat box nearer to the centre of the
screen so that I don't have to focus on the right-edge, whilst the
contacts list which only needs to be focused on occassionally, i.e.
when starting a new chat, can sit off to the right quite nicely.
Obviously I can drag the whole window towards the centre of the screen
but with the two panes swapped over, I think it would be possible to
leave the window aligned with the right-hand edge.

Anyway, I'll just go back to the dual window mode for now, as I feel
that works better for me, allowing me to leave the contacts over on
the right-edge whilst having the chat window in the centre of the
screen.

Regards
Derek

Ok, I edited the properties file and love the single UI. Hope this will become the default once it’s been further tested.

Maybe when dev team has more capacity ask the mailing list for detailed testing...
