[jitsi-dev] Space in the notification-popup

#1

Hey

Sometimes the notification popups are too small to show the entire text of a message. I attached a comparison between how it is in trunk and my local modifications.
Specific points are:
- Move the message title into the title of the popup
- Remove the icon if it's the Jitsi logo
- Makes the popup a bit wider and higher, at most 5 lines instead of 3
- A minimum of three lines in height

The point of removing the application name from the title is that a user IMHO knows which application has caused the popup (general look&feel and through the small logo in the upper left corner). This is also why the big logo can removed: it's a duplication.

Would it be okay for you if I modify it like in the attachment? Or are there other ideas how to gain some space?

Regards,
Ingo

Indeed they are. Thanks for looking into this.

Good! However I think I'd prefer we kept the application name in there.
For example:

"<app.name>: Ingo wrote"

- Remove the icon if it's the Jitsi logo

I agree we can get rid of the Jitsi icon for things like error messages
or system notifications. Personally I like it there, but people around
here seem to agree so, fine.

It is of course important that we keep avatars when they are available,
which I think you have already taken into account.

There's one more case: instant messages from people with no avatars. We
might want to use the generic avatar there (the impersonal avatar we use
in the call dialog for example). This way we'd have the same layout for
all incoming messages which should make things easier to follow for
users. WDYT?

OK.

- A minimum of three lines in height

OK.

I don't quite agree here. I really think that recognizing such details
is automatic only for relatively experienced users, so I think it is
important to at least prefix the title with the application name.

How does this sound?

Cheers,
Emil

I thought about that as well, it was a 50/50 decision to drop it
I'm perfectly fine with the prefix. However: Can this cause conflicts with your private builds that potentially have longer application names?

Two ideas to keep the icon:
- use it as the background image (but: this kind of violates the general look&feel as we never use the logo as background anywhere)
- Make the popup even higher: Use a two-line title (first line app-name, second the message title), adapt the icon to the height of these two lines (but: space-waster again)

It is of course important that we keep avatars when they are available,
which I think you have already taken into account.

Yes, that’s still the case.

The callsite has to deal with passing the relevant "no-avatar"-icon to the notification service, but they should be easily identifiable.

We'll take care of them if it does :).

That's alright ... let's just drop it
