[jitsi-dev] Skype in Jitsi ?

#1

Hello,

I heared that a russian guy "Efim Bushmanov" had reingeniered the skype
protocoll (an older version of it)
and put it as open source on his website.
Are there plans for integrating skype in Jitsi on that base?

I do not speak for Jitsi but I doubt that.

One simple reason (among others) is that the Unofficial Open Source
Skype is not really usable in its current state:

Please note that the code of the reimplementation is written in C, not
in Java.

As far as I am concerned it is more important to get rid of rough edges
of Jitsi and other software implementing XMPP Jingle, ZRTP etc. so that
those open standards become at least as easy to use as Skype for normal
people who currently use Skype.

BTW: I also suggest to have a look at WebRTC in case your are interested
in bleeding edge standard developments:

Cheers,
Andreas

It seems that the reverse engineering is seen as a violations of the
Skype intellectual property:

So dont hold your breath.
The only chance of intergrating Skype legally in other apps is Skype
releasing a proprietary (binary blob) library that has a documented
API.
And the recent acquisition by Microsoft probably wont help either.
