[jitsi-dev] SIP Calls

#1

So, if I just want to call , how do I
go about it? I don’t necessarily want to setup a host account in
order to call a direct sip number. I don’t need, to necessarily
register with anyone.
As you probably know, when I enter a direct number as the one about
in the blank space and hit the “call” icon I get a “Call Via” menu.
But, I obviously don’t need to call via anything since it’s a direct
call.
There may be an easy way to accomplish this, but it’s not
intuitively obvious to me. One method might be to put a “Direct SIP
Call” option in the “Call Via” menu.
Thanks for any help you can give me.

Setting up a registrarLess account (or profile if you prefer) in SIP
Communicator has nothing to do with registering with any one ... which
is exactly why it is called registrarLess ;).

We understand this is not intuitive but then again it's just a hack
built for a handful of users that for various reason don't want/need a
server.

The overwhelming majority of the users would use a server, just as they
would use an SMTP server to send mail even though they don't absolutely
need to.

As you probably know, when I enter a direct number as the one about in

"Call via" let's you choose which of the local accounts/profile you
would call from. It does not directly refer to a server.

There may be an easy way to accomplish this, but it's not intuitively
obvious to me. One method might be to put a "Direct SIP Call" option in
the "Call Via" menu.

I believe that I already explained this in one of my previous mails to you:

<quote>
  In order to
make calls without using a proxy you need to create what we call a
Registrarless account. To do so, create a new SIP account and only enter
a user name without a server part. You should see an example in the
account wizard. In other words, if you are determined to run without a
server then instead of setting your account as "jervin@example.com" you
should configure it as simply "jervin".

Hope this helps,
Emil

I agree with you, I am using the product in a way it's not currently meant to be used and am suffering the consequences. I think SIP Communicator / Jitsi a wonderful product and I appreciate the work you folks have put into it, you should be proud of it.

I just forget how to setup a registarless account, my bad. I'll see if I can find the older note on how to set it up.

I think the philosophy for configuring SC/Jitsi is different enough from the other products that I've used that it confuses me (Bria, Xlite)

I also know that SC/Jitsi is a work in progress.
