[jitsi-dev] Results of short jitsi testing session

#1

Hi all,

I just had a short test session with current stable jitsi between mac
/ windows. Good point: VOIP connection setup was working instantly.
But I noticed a lot of buggy problems during normal use of the
software.

Usability not intuitive:
Security comparison word not explained at all. Not useful. Confusing
for inexperienced users.
Click on the little lock possible with unclear effects. What happens
after clicking the lock? Not intuitive.

Video:
Share video on mac -> nothing happens, reshare video works then

Screen-Sharing:
Resizing of screen share region not possible
Switch back to video sharing on A -> remote desktop sharing on B is gone
Desktop remote control not working at all

Regards,
Thomas

Hello,

Recently i too did some calls with Jitsi (Linux-Linux). Both computers running Debian 32-bit.
Used Gtalk accounts, with the silk codec. The net connection of the remote computer was limited to 1 Mbit download/512 Kbit upload (my has ~30 MBit). Both computers connected to the same VPN in the same subnet and routes between them.

Voice - very good and reliable connection. The sound quality was excellent. The only drawback is that sometimes (very few occasions) there was some slight crackling - interestingly this was heard on only one of the computers at a time, during which the other computer had perfectly clear sound. Both had echo cancellation+noise suppression activated. 5-9 KB/s transfer.

Video - the remote computer had a webcam so we tested it. Bad. Almost half of the time i saw garbled stuff, and only after a full screen refresh was quite good for a few moments then bad again. Both computers had only the h264 codec enabled. When enabling the webcam during talk, both sides had bad sound quality (that cleared after a while) - here the remote side bandwidth limitation may had an effect. I tried adjusting th emax bandwidth for the webcam to 30 KB/s, but we had exactly the same ~50 KB/s transfer as before (of which 7-9 KB/s was the sound).

Desktop sharing - passive mode quite good, lower cpu usage than before. Remote control did not work at all. When the remote side stopped the screen sharing, Jitsi hanged until i killed its process. On the other computer hanged aswell, but recovered sometimes after i killed mine.

Now, having both compters connected to the same VPN i cannot say about the over-the-internet calling reliability - Jitsi always chose the VPN for the data transfer probably thinking that both computers are in the same LAN.

Yup, making the ZRTP alerts clearer is one thing we have on our todo
list. I do assure you comarisons are useful though. Have a look at

http://jitsi.org/faq/zrtp

Click on the little lock possible with unclear effects. What happens
after clicking the lock? Not intuitive.

Indeed not. Important though. Also working on this one.

Video:
Share video on mac -> nothing happens, reshare video works then

We'd need to know the details. Logs would be a good start:

http://jitsi.org/faq/logs

In some cases (typically when asterisk is in the middle) both clients
need to start streaming before video starts working.

Screen-Sharing:
Resizing of screen share region not possible

Indeed not. We haven't implemented that yet. Contributions are welcome.

Switch back to video sharing on A -> remote desktop sharing on B is gone

This is intentional. The desktop sharing goes into a video stream, so
keeping both would be problematic.

Desktop remote control not working at all

What server were you using to connect the two clients?
