[jitsi-dev] Pulse Audio - crackling sound

#1

Hi,

... I tried to establish a connection and had terrible sound quality. It sounds interrupted and crackling.

I then tried to set sound output to Javasound which worked for a couple of seconds and then froze completely.

The next idea was to change the JRE to the SUN's version. No avail.

Only setting the sound to Alsa had some effect as - after a while logging error messages - I get clear sound. (not as good as my other machines - but at least understandable)

The following logs occur:

Can it have anything todo with the soundcard? Basically, intel hda
sound with pulseaudio stopped working in Linux around kernel 3.0. I
have some posts on my blog for it. I got some improvements with
rt-kernel but finally switched to a usb-soundcard having spent too
much work on figuring it out (actually in my setup jitsi usually
performed much better than skype, so if you want to reproduce the
error, compare also with the results in skype).
Does your sound work normally (try to record and play in audacity)?

Hope this helps,
Ulno

Hello,
This is an age old issue with Jitsi. I had the same experience as you. My primary issue was high CPU usage coupled with crackling sound. It happened to me (and others) with all Ubuntu versions 9.04-10.04 and Debian testing (Squeeze/Wheezy up to kernel 3.0) when i used PulseAudio. It happened on all machines i tried it on (Dell Optiplex 755, Dell Inspiron D630 with Core2Duo CPU, AMD MCP78S chipset with Athlon II) so its not a specific hardware issue.
Now, as i use Debian i have the choice to not use PulseAudio and this way it works very well (with ALSA) - i have almost crystal clear audio (some very very seldom crackling when i talk to lower bandwidth connections).
The issue is that some newer distros like Ubuntu use PulseAudio as their main audio manager and uninstalling it is a pain (i only have experience with Ubuntu up to 9.10) and definitely not for unexperienced users.

I tried different settings in puseaudios config files but none helped so far.

Basically confirming Laszlo (also running debian), however, I am
still trying to make pulseaudio work (it just becomes more and more
difficult) and it definitely works better with some soundcards. The
worst seems to be hda audio.
Sometimes it might be easier to just grab a usb-headset than
de-installing pulse-audio -- too much is dependent today on it.
Also try running jitsi as pasuspend jitsi (will basically disable
pulseaudio and sound for all other apps while jitsi is running).

Good luck and report back,
Ulno

The next idea was to change the JRE to the SUN's version. No avail.

Only setting the sound to Alsa had some effect as - after a while logging
error messages - I get clear sound. (not as good as my other machines - but
at least understandable)

Does recording and playing of sound with audacity work on the Oneric
(even if you say perfectly)?

Basically confirming Laszlo (also running debian), however, I am
still trying to make pulseaudio work (it just becomes more and more
difficult) and it definitely works better with some soundcards. The
worst seems to be hda audio.
Sometimes it might be easier to just grab a usb-headset than
de-installing pulse-audio -- too much is dependent today on it.
Also try running jitsi as pasuspend jitsi (will basically disable
pulseaudio and sound for all other apps while jitsi is running).

Good luck and report back,

The strange thing is that Jitsi is fine on my other machine with Ubuntu Maverick and a smaller processor. The pulse audio on the Oneric machine works too - perfectly. But not with Jitsi.

What's wrong?

Ok, for me recording never works with internal sound card with
pulseaudio since kernel 3.0. I had crackling with my usb sound card in
some applications too (jitsi, wine, audacity, musescore, skype). This
went away after I switched to a realtime kernel.
Have you tried using jitsi with pasuspend?

Ok, for me recording never works with internal sound card with
pulseaudio since kernel 3.0. I had crackling with my usb sound card in
some applications too (jitsi, wine, audacity, musescore, skype). This
went away after I switched to a realtime kernel.
Have you tried using jitsi with pasuspend?

Hi, guys!

Without any intent to distract you from the current discussion, I just
wanted to let you know that we intend to introduce a PulseAudio
backend. We suspect that the problem with PortAudio in Jitsi may be
related to the fact that PortAudio uses PulseAudio but not directly,
rather as Alsa. Additionally, we'd also like to try to take advantage
of other PulseAudio features through the backend such as, for example,
its echo cancellation. We're not currently able to pinpoint when
exactly we plan to go with it though (because of higher priorities).

Best regards,
Lyubomir

I tried myself pasuspender and jitsi. You have to select the soundcard
under the audio-settings then too - don't take the default. Take the
alsa soundcard. Works pretty well - no cracking on usb-soundcard, but
some cracking on internal soundcard, however recording seems to work
without much crackling (trying an echo call via sip), which it does
not when using pulseaudio (with pulseaudio it's just awful).

Conrad, does this change anything work for you?

So there is some hope. That sounds nice and prevents me from wasting my time.

Any ideas for workarounds? I wonder why setting ALSA is throwing so many error messages (please see my initial post) and why Java sound worked fine for a while and than hangs.

Thank you for your work. I can't wait for a Jitsi without sound woes  Keep on coding.

Best regards,
Lyubomir

Hi Ulrich

... setting the sound to "surround71" helps a bit - with the pasuspender. I'm not sure if I would do this in production though.

Thanks for the help. Let's see what's going on.

Greetings
Conrad

I tried myself pasuspender and jitsi. You have to select the soundcard
under the audio-settings then too - don't take the default. Take the
alsa soundcard. Works pretty well - no cracking on usb-soundcard, but
some cracking on internal soundcard, however recording seems to work
without much crackling (trying an echo call via sip), which it does
not when using pulseaudio (with pulseaudio it's just awful).

Conrad, does this change anything work for you?

Hi all,

just my 2 cents here:

the combination of PortAudio (which is "just" a wrapper lib over several
audio systems for Windows, Linux, etc) in combination with PulseAudio often
is a "deadly" combination. Currently there is an ongoing discussion
on the PortAudio mailing list to address PortAudio / Alsa problematic, maybe
in that turn they also have a look to PortAudio / PulsAudio topic.

According to the discussions on the PortAudi list it seems that the Alsa
implementation of PortAudio is sort of "suboptimal" - seems that the
implementor of that part wasn't fully aware of Alsa architecture and the
priniciples of Alsa, thus some problems occur.

Lyubomir, when going to PulsAudio (I have no experience with it, I always
de-install it  ): would this affect the Alsa implementation of Jitsi?
Planned (as an idea) to have Alsa (aka PortAudio) and PulseAudio in parallel?

Best regards,
Werner

Hey Werner,

I'd expect the PulseAudio integration in Jitsi to be implemented as an
alternative Audio System which is just like PortAudio and JavaSound
and which coexists with the others in parallel. In other words, I
would't expect PulseAudio to affect PortAudio.

Lyubomir
